Sudden issue with books sideloaded onto Kindle not appearing

Hello! I've been using calibre to sideload books onto my kindle for I think about 7 years now and I have never run into this issue before. Basically, I have a list of like 15 books that I tried to load via Calibre, and all seemed to be normal. Upon ejecting the device, however, only 2 showed up on the kindle. I plugged it back in, and according to Calibre the books are 'on' my kindle - but they are nowhere to be found. I deleted all the books off the device with calibre and tried to re-load them, with the same result. Calibre thinks everything is fine, only 2 books show up in my device. I have ruled out any issues with the sort settings on my kindle, and even searching specifically for a book produces no results, and rebooting the kindle did nothing. I'm not sure what to do to fix it, as I haven't had any issues with Calibre misbehaving before. The books seem fine if I open them with the Callibre book reader.

Calibre Version: 4.10.1 x64
OS: Windows 7
Device: Kindle Paperwhite 2, Firmware 5.12.2
Plugins: EpubMerge, EpubSplit, Find Duplicates, KFX Input, and KindleUnpack

None of the plugins were used on any of the books in question.

Did you check to see if they are showing up in 'read'?

I see this reported a lot when many books are loaded at once into a Kindle device. By default, the Kindle will attempt to index each loaded book for the full text search feature. Doing this to many books at a time will cause a great delay in the books appearing in the Kindle home page or even freeze the device entirely if there are memory problems.

Load the books in smaller packets—and then wait a bit for the process to complete.

@Tarana Nope, they are not in read.

@Brett Merkey Is there any way to tell if it's trying to index? About half of these I actually loaded over a month ago, and just noticed they never showed up when I went to read one of them. The kindle has been charged/on that whole time. I also tried uploading just 1 book, and no matter which I picked, it never showed up after waiting hours / more than a day for some.

@kovid goyal Thanks! I was looking for something like that, but I guess didn't use the right search term or something. Please see my response to Brett Merkey. I did delete all the books using windows explorer and have so far tried to upload each one, one at a time. I've done about half and none of them will show up, even after a few hours. I've also reset the kindle a few times.

@KittyNin I had exactly the same problem as you (it started mid February). Like you, I'd been side loading books for years without any problems and then they suddenly stopped showing up.

I ended up doing a factory reset. I now have firmare 5.12.4 and the problem has disappeared. Not sure what firmware I had before, but it was from about two years ago.

I don't like how this new firmware manages collections (all my books just appear in one long list instead of being sorted into collections), but at least I can confirm that the problem disappeared. My sideloaded books are now visible again.
