Renaming Creates Duplicate Files?
Morning all!
Nearly every time I rename a book in my calibre library, it creates a new folder with a new set of files (book, metadata, cover)… so the storage space is QUICKLY climbing. The "find duplicates" plugin doesn't seem to be able to look for duplicate book files in the library, just titles/info within the program itself. Any thoughts / suggestions? Example posted - I removed "A Novel" from the title of this book, and now I have TWO folders which EACH contain a copy of the book file, etc. They're listed with the same # (1862), so Calibre seems to know it's the same... but again, the book and its files were duplicated in a new folder... |

HOW did you rename? WHAT OS? Have you run Library Maintainence? (I expect there will be lots of errors) ![]() ![]() You must pause the sync while Calibre is in use AND we really recommend that it be one way (Shadow yor Library) |

I actually do pause OneDrive sync (where I keep my library so I can access from various devices) whenever I use Calibre... do you mean syncing within the Calibre program? (if so... not sure on how to do that...)
1. I renamed in the Calibre program in the "title" field, and this happens nearly EVERY time. 2. Windows 10. 3. see above - where do I find maint in Calibre program? (THANKS in advance!!!!) |

Ok, found Library Maint in Calibre (I'm dumb). It gives me quite a few "extra titles" and "extra authors" - but nothing else. Can you explain what can/should be done with the info? (screenshot attached) I want to keep my title the way it is in Calibre… but want to somehow have the files not duplicate. (Again, Thanks) |

It says there are no errors in the library -
"Found no errors in your caliber library database. Do you want Calibre to check if the files in your library match the information in the database?" The attached is what I get when I do that. Additionally, I tried re-adding a book that said it had an author with no books attached. 1) the book was in the library (program) and in the file folders where the files are stored... 2) adding the book from the "extra" author just created a new folder with new files... 3) after adding, the "extra" author was no longer on the list when I re-ran maint... |

Move your library from your OneDrive directory and try again. I would think that's he problem. The problem being that you rename and the directory gets changed and when you re-enable OneDrive, chances are that the original directory gets synced to your library.
What I do is have one central set of libraries and I network map to the drive the libraries are stored on and I can access them very easily from any of my computers. I know It's said not to do this, but I've never had a problem in over 10 years. |

What you describe is a classic case of (cloudsync race condition ) putting back that which you properly removed/changed with Calibre.
Calibre normally cleans up after itself. An Author without ANY books, say ssomething interfered with the process. Last book to be changed/removed from that Author (as was spelled) , deletes the Author folder. Same goes for a title rename (your original case). There MAY be an exception because of non-standard usage (Betterread can probably answer), where Auxillary files are store in the Book or Author folders. It might not get deleted as it is NOT Empty (those files). If you do NOT store non-book formats, this should not ever happen |

OneDrive doesn't play nice with Calibre. I used it once, but quit because it created numerous errors and randomly deleted files. Dropbox is better, but even Dropbox creates conflicted copies occasionally, so you must be on your guard and run Library Maintenance regularly.
