Cool Word to EPUB

When converting a .docx file to an EPUB, I sometimes end up with span tags. These usually show up in unordered bulleted lists, but not all the time. (The point being, I do not want or need them)

.
I am wondering if it is something I am unintentionally doing in Word, or a setting I have in Calibre.
.
I am a strict user of styles in Word, in case you are wondering.

Are they spans with classes or empty spans?

With classes.

I did find a little bit of a pattern, tonight. (The pattern in the lists was from memory) They are often in the same paragraphs with superscript numbers, which were footnotes in Word and are end notes in the EPUB.

I can post an example if that would help.

If the spans have classes, they are (probably) doing something. Live with it.

What happens if you remove spans? If you cannot remove the spans without something changing that you don't want, as @DNSB said, Live with it.

Not all style properties sensibly map to ebook HTML and CSS.
I make a small test document for any style change or new property.

When I take the spans out it looks exactly like I want. Often, it actually looks worse with it's block selections. I am more and more beginning to think it is driven by the superscript tags. It thinks it needs to span something when it doesn't.
It's not a deal breaker for me, but it would save time to not have to remove them all.
Is there a was in Calibre to say, "Never use spans."?

The easiest way to dump all of those spans in one go is to install Diaps Editing Toolbag. It's an editor plugin. You can remove all of those spans in one go.
