It sounds like a corrupt database. I suggest you do a Restore database. It's found when you right click the database icon and select Library Maintenance and then Restore database. It rebuilds the database using the information found in the file metadata.opf in each book's directory.

Something is blocking calibre from opening its databse, typical culprits are antivirus and filesync programs. Excludethe calibre library folder from these and you should be fine.

I tried RESTORING DB, restore successful, problem still exists.

I turned off Norton antivirus, problem still exists.

I killed Allway Sync (file backups), problem still exists.

Thanks for helping!

Try running in Windows Safe Mode, if that works then another start up task is blocking calibre. An orderly process of elimination such as a binary chop is the best way to find it.

You can try running Calibre 4.8 from the command line with the following command calibre --ignore-plugins

That will disable all plugins and you can test if Calibre is working. If it is, then it's something to do with the plugins. From there you can run Calibre normally and disable the plugins one-by-one until you find which one is the problem.

Try installing portable, you can leave the existing install as it is. Portable is completely self contained - if it has the same problem then

UnableToOpen DB

I installed calibre portable on my local D drive and it SUCCESSFULLY added the book

I tried again with my non-portable calibre, same error, can't open DB

I'm not sure what you mean there is an error with my graphic.

What does this "test" tell us? Note that my calibre db is on an NAS (Synology), always has been for years, and always worked. Not sure if that is relevant. NAS working fine but curiously the file dates for the calibre data db show 3/8/2091.

Thoughts?

Sorry I didn't realize the issues with db on NAS. Wonder why that never caused a problem before now.

Much appreciate everyone's help!

Happy New Year/Decade!

That is the most common issue: Fragile. It takes only a little to change from 'I get away with a NAS' to WHAT the heck is going on!

FWIW Everyone should make it a habit of visiting the FAQ pages regularly (if you use a default install) and Frequently, if you like to change things up.
