Returned Inkpad: Quirky power on behaviour Inkpad Pro 3

Normally, one press of the power button turns the e-reader on. However, when it has been unused for a few hours, turning it on becomes harder at times: Double press, pressing the power button with the page forward button or with the menu button. When all that doesn't work, I plug in the USB cable and repeat: Succesfully. Odd bit is that the battery is still at 76%.

Anybody, has any idea what is happening and how I can resolve it?

Sounds like a hardware issue and you are not alone.

Hmmm. I don't know. They had a battery issue: The device would only work while plugged in. I've done a factory reset. (Uploaded books remain, dictionaries reset.) I haven't had the issue today, yet. If it returns, I am returning it to Amazon. (I have until the 31th of January.)

How about updates. Didn't the Polish server have an firmware update? Maybe good to see whether it is able to handle an update without quirks.

Hope you are right, you can go back and forth with the updates [having the swupdate.bin in the root of an under usb accessable partition while starting the device and pressing left and right button till the update message appears], pocketbook doesn't mind it.
Btw: I'm using this big dictionary on my device too. It does nothing to the performance of my device, though I don't have an Inkpad.

The pocketbook support emailed me with this approach:
Quote:
In this case please accomplish the following actions:
1. Connect the device to the PC, preferably using another USB cable.
2. Press the power button an hold it pressed for at least 15-20 seconds.
The device must resume working.

Should it bring no result, leave the device for charging for 2 hours and try to reset it again.

If these recommendations did not help, proceed as follows:

1. Press and hold the Power button pressed for not less than 10 seconds (the device will go to the reset mode);
2. Continue holding the Power button pressed and connect the device to the wall charger (preferably) or to the PC via the USB cable;
3. Keep holding the Power button pressed for over one minute.
4. After you release the Power button, the device will turn on and you will see the “Low battery” message. Now please charge the e-reader normally for 2-3 hours and the device will boot.
For now I haven't had the issue for four days, so I can't test. I am finding the device to be incredibly laggy, though: Takes a while to switch to home screen, takes a while to go to dictionary lookup. Takes a while to get the markers to respond to highlight another line. Takes a while to get the markers to crop the page manually. I am incredibly patient it seems, because when I showed the device to a friend, I realized just how long it took: too long to show what the device could do.

Regarding the sluggish behaviour:
I made a test with some reference pdf's some years ago and filmed it. Newer devices should work better but still you have something to compare your device with.

Generally my Pocketbooks are very fast except when confronted with large pdf's or huge epubs (more than 10000 pages in the epub).

Very painful to watch a device choke on a 17MB pdf-file. I mean a nature magazine of 300MB, alright, but 17MB...Not even my Kobo Aura H2O 1st generation was that bad. Did have to use Koreader of course, never even tested the native PDF reader after my first device.

How did the Pocketbook 6xx perform with koreader handling the PDF's?

Try the pdf before telling this about the device. The pdf is linked under the video. Its full of vector graphics which are difficult to show even on a pc. Nature magazine is full of bitmaps, much easier to handle.

No offense taken, in the meantime I did test it with my Touch HD with actual firmware too. It is significantly quicker but still takes some time. Tried KoReader too. Couldn't find a reason to use KoReader since the internal Pocketbook PDF Viewer is quite sufficient.

My TL3 usually has little lag when operating in EPUBs at least. Dictionary, marking is quite snappy, except if the book contains lots of images. I would expect the Inkpad 3 Pro to be even snappier. Of course, it's a matter of perception.

Do you mean dictionary/notes mode being snappy or also just normally selecting a word, extending the reach to the whole sentence, writing a comment? Because the last one is at least on the very edge of non-workable: Still teaches me patience!
Or is it my device or the inkpad 3? Because than I really have to return it!

I just had another quirky encounter:

At the Pocketbook suspend/shutdown screen I press the power button: nothing happens!
Then I press it again and hold it for a few secs: Nothing happens.
Then I hold it for a long time >30s: Nothing happens.
Then I press and it starts immediately. Battery at 42%. Functioning properly.

Is this a case of a malfunctioning device that should be returned or am I missing something?

My guess: it was frozen that can be a sign of a malfunctioning device. I never experienced this with any pocketbooks I owned and own.
To the experience my explanatory guesses.
1&2 device is frozen not reacting to any input if powerbutton is pressed not long enough it just triggers suspend which is not available at frozen status.
3) Longpressing powerbutton does switch the device off, since it is frozen before nothing to see on the screen.
4) After that device reboots, that should be recognizable by some changes on the screen.

Can speak only for my device (PB 631). Tested the last with the linked pdf (smaller one). There is a small lag while selecting text over several lines but is under 0.5s. Notetaking no lag, neither while writing via keyboard nor by scribbling in the pdf.
