Kobo with Overdrive strangeness
C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters was borrowed for me from our library via Overdrive today (I had put it on hold a few weeks ago). I saw that it was available in my email and thought, "this will be a good test for the Aura 2." No luck. What's weird is that it showed the book in my library and offers to place a hold on it, but it won't let me download it or recognize that I've already borrowed it? I checked the ISBN for the Kobo Store version and the Overdrive version and they're the same. So a new wrinkle of weirdness in this process.
EDIT: It looks like the problem was the software between my ears. I guess you need to sync. When I did that it came right up. Sorry. I just went ahead and downloaded it on the Tolino. EDIT: Now I'll have to remember to return the book from the Kobo first. Last time I returned it from the Tolino and (even though the library said it was returned) the Kobo said there was an issue trying to return the book and wouldn't let me do it. So I had to wait the 21 days on the Kobo (even though the book was already read and returned). Last edited by rcentros; 12-24-2019 at 05:58 AM. |

My wife got an email on Saturday from Overdrive notifying her that a hold was available, it didn't show up on her H2O2 until Monday. The cynic in me thinks the villain here Overdrive, trying to push people to use Libby

Yeah, they must really like that Libby for some reason. Every time I go to Overdrive they're trying to get me to install it. But, in my case, the issue turned out to be my mistake. I didn't think to sync (which makes sense, how would the Kobo know I had checked out the book without it?). I never fail to make an idiot of myself. I'm talented.

libby is an excellent app. I sorely miss it because my library switched from overdrive to RBdigital, whose mobile app is terrible
have you actually tried libby ? slick browsing experience for library- easy checkout, decent customisable reader app which remembers your position and syncs to libby on other devices if you have more than one - what's not to like ? but its android only, AFAIK, it will not run on a kobo e-reader |

One thing with Overdrive that has changed is that you can no longer log in with an Overdrive (rather than library-specific) account, which was important for those of us with Overdrive access to more than one library. Overdrive has removed that log-in option, forcing you to log in to a specific library. That means that when I check out a book from my "other" Overdrive library, I have to log out of Library A on my Kobo and log in to Library B in order for it to see the borrowed book and download it.
It's a minor annoyance and people who only ever borrow Overdrive books from one library won't ever notice it. |

and while I was troubleshooting that, not knowing they'd left, I uninstalled and reinstalled libby and definitely i logged back in with overdrive email and password ( and my library card is still associated with that overdrive login ) |

I'm not going to say "never" but I currently don't have any need for Libby. I like borrowing books directly from the device I'm going to use or, if at home, (sometimes) from my desktop computer. Libby is redundant for me. If I borrow a book with Overdrive I can read it in the standard Kobo account on my phone anyhow (for the rare occasions when I'm stuck somewhere and want to read from my phone). I guess if an Android device was your main reading machine Libby would make sense.

you don't have to read on it...you can listen to audiobooks on it ;-) I don't actually use libby, but I do use the overdrive app, not for reading, just for ease of checking out, putting books on hold and returning books. Much easier than on an ereader, or a pc, imo. but if you don't want to sync your ereader, probably not any easier since you need ADE and a pc.

good thing we're all different then. my sensitive eyes cry at the thought of reading on those screens at night. plus, i do find it awfully hard to read on anything when i'm going for a walk or have my eyes closed ;-)
