e-book viewer - footnotes box placement query
0Hi!
I am a new poster, so hope this isn't a stupid question. I have been using Caibre for years. The older versions of the e-book viewer had the footnotes viewed at the bottom of the screen under the main page separated by a pagebreak effect. The newest has it in a pop up box fixed in the middle of the page. This isn't normally an issue if there aren't that many footnotes in the text, but if there are, for instance if you are studying something like one of Shakespeare's works, then there are many on one page and half the time the box obscures what you need to see or reference, but you cannot shift the position of the box - at least as far as I have found! Is there any way to change the settings back to how they were in the older version where the footnotes are at the bottom for ease of viewing - by far the best way of viewing them - or a way to make the current viewing box float around the screen, because the way it is set now is driving me nuts! TIA for any help - it would be greatly appreciated! Freezersarecool. |

I'm afraid not, for technical reasons. The way the thing is implemented is completely different now.

Thank you for your quick reply! Oh, ok. :-) In that case, is there any way in which the footnote box could be detatched and be in a box outside the viewed screen in the same way that you can have the Table of Contents separate to the main viewed screen? Could that be made possible? TIA, Freezersarecool. |

No the technical limitation is basically that the footnote is now rendered inside the embedded browser, so it cannot be detached and come outside, iether below or to the sides or floating.

Hello again! Thank you for your quick and clear reply to my query. Much appreciated. If at any time there would be an option to be able to use different versions of the e-viewer with the latest edition of the main Library software, that would be a great option for someone like me. Maybe an added bolt on, or just a separate extra downloadable for those that want, might that be something you could consider, please? I do occasionally use Kindle, Kobo, etc and for what I use them for - mainly purchased fiction - they are great. I do actually prefer in several ways some of the older functions of the e-viewer and have usually used it in preference to other readers anyway, whether for a book in my Calibre library or not. The fact that there are different types is excellent because I find different things I read or study suit the functions of different readers. No complaints - the new one is great apart from this one issue I have which is just pertinent to *loads* of footnotes. (I have a blazing new fast laptop only weeks old, yet it seems quite slow at retrieving the footnotes, by the way. Not sure why...) Many thanks for providing such excellent software. I would be lost without it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Freezersarecool. |

Thank you for your quick and clear reply. Much appreciated. Would there be instead any way in which in the future there would be a choice of versions of e-viewer available to be used with the main Libarary software? As a bolt-on or possible extra download choice? Would you please consider this? I do occasionally use Kindle, Kobo - mainly for bought fiction - but do prefer Calibre e-viewer for most things and usually use it in preference, whether a book is in my library or not. It is useful to have a choice of e-viewers, as I have found that different types of books and study materials suit different functions in e-viewers - the footnote function in the older versions is one such. I am not complaning about the changes in the newest versions, by the way, anything but! I think it is great! I just have this one issue with *loads* of footnotes in text! (I have an only weeks old blazing quick new laptop, but the footnotes in the new style box seem to open relatively slowly, btw. Not sure why...) Thank you for providing such excellent software - I would be lost without Calibre! ![]() ![]() ![]() Freezersarecool |

You can use whatever viewer you like with calibre, simply set it as your OS default and tell calibre not to use its internal viewer in Preferences->Behavior
