Loading new computer

My laptop that held my Calibre and all the files was destroyed. Luckily a large number of books were on my Kindle. I loaded Calibre onto a new laptop and plugged in my Kindle to sync but the new empty Calibre won't pull from the Kindle. Is there a way to load what's on my Kindle into the new Calibre?

Depends on which Kindle, and some.
Many newer devices have 'Protected storage'. That is, storage that the USB port can't touch.
Then there is DRM (we can't discuss removal here at MR. Ask at Alf's place)

Why not log into your Kindle account at Amazon and download to your PC (Kindle 4 PC will be needed)
?

How did the books get on the device? If you sideloaded them, start calibre, connect the device and go to the device list. Select the books you want to put in the library and right click. Then select the option to add them to the library. That should work for anything that doesn't have DRM.
