Adobe Digital Editions Authorization

Have a slight problem. One of my Kobos went wonky & to fix it I had to sign out. That solved the problem but led to another one. Apparently ADE only allows you a max of 6 devices on an account. So after signing out of my Kobo account on the device I tried to authorize it again to carry on. No dice!

The “authorize” is greyed out. All options for the device are greyed out in ADE. I did a chat with Adobe & they apparently don’t support free programs. I’m trying to find out how to see a list of devices to deauthorize the ones I no longer own. I didn’t know I had to do that. I cannot find how to see a list of authorized devices to get rid of the ones I no longer own. I even tried to deauthorize my Kobo Aura One to reauthorize my Clara but that didn’t work. Now my Clara & Aura One are not authorized for ADE. Only my Libra 2 is.

Chat was useless. They say go to the forums. The same question was asked years ago with no answer. Books I’ve bought are fine. Books downloaded directly from the library on the device are fine. Thank God for Calibre!!! But I don’t know what to do. If I have to periodically sign out of my device they won’t be authorized.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

I've had problems with ADE forever. I long ago gave up on them for your problem and I've spent hours with Kobo customer services on another one: since I changed emails, I can't buy books outside Amazon, since I have no way anymore to open .ascm files.

There was a time when I used the Sony app, way after they stopped producing ereaders, but it is not possible anymore. There was a time when a former ADE version worked, but not anymore. So I despair, and dream of a time when publishers realize that their reliance on ADE when NOBODY at Adobe supports it is counterproductive.

Copy the ADE authorization file from your Libra 2 and copy it to your other Kobo and see if it works. Also keep this file as a backup as you can restore it to your Libra 2 without having to register.

Just did that and it sort of worked. The device says authorized but if I go to move a library book directly from ADE it says something to the effect of not allowed to copy or send this to the device.

And I even edited the file entering the serial number of the Clara but no go.

It's likely too late for you but copy only the activation.xml file to backup your Adobe authorization. The device.xml is tied to the device including the device fingerprint.

I've done this for quite a few years and it can and does work.

The alternative is to contact Adobe customer service who are pretty decent about increasing authorizations.

When I checked the adobe help account I was directed to this page https://account.adobe.com/activated-devices which may be helpful to you, although it doesn't show my registration of Adobe Digital Editions on my computer which is not promising.

Hmm I've changed my ADE email more than once. Can't you de-register ADE and register it to your new e-mail?

Yes I do that which is why I said thank god for calibre but I still wanted it authorized for some things. That just might be my only solution since the folks at Adobe don’t seem to be understanding what I’m asking or they just say we don’t support free programs. IMO that’s just frigging stupid but what do I know.

Ask to speak to someone more senior. Often in chat you're speaking to a person who just answers the phones/sits at a computer who doesn't really know anything technical. Risk sounding like a 'Karen' and insist upon speaking to a senior technician.

I suspect that page does not show anything for ADE. If it matches what Adobe shows to Canadian customers, when I sign in with the email I used for ADE, it shows nothing while if I sign in with my corporate email, it shows my Creative Cloud entitlements.

You can try going to the Adobe Community for support but be prepared for hoop jumping. It might be easier just to register with a new email address.

Is this file located only on the device? I've looked into everything user, app and Adobe related and ran a full scan of my drive with zero results. Win10 x64.

It is on the device in the directory ".adobe-digital-editions". I would suggest copying the complete directory. That should make sure the files in it are consistent if you restore them later.

For calibre user, the backup done by my Kobo Utilities plugin includes these files.
