reading my Kindle books after closing my Kindle a/c

I'm confused about what happens after closing a Kindle account. I guess I can continue reading the books currently on my Kindle, if I keep wifi turned off. And I can download the books onto a PC or tablet.

But can I read those books after I close the Kindle account? I've tried to read what Amazon say on their website, but have not got a clear answer.

While you probably can continue to read the books on your Kindle, if you keep the wifi off, your best bet is to download all the books to your PC and remove the DRM. Otherwise you'll probably lose the ability to read them. And if you buy another ereader, you can't read those books on your new device, unless the DRM has been removed.

Note that you'll have to strip the DRM before you close your account. You won't be able to do it afterwards.

Thanks, Sirtel. I'll read up on removing DRM.

But if you close your account, you won't be able to download your eBooks or for that matter buy anything from Amazon.

The OP has to download the books before closing the account. And they can always open a new account to buy something, but the books can't be transferred from one account to another.

There are no separate "Kindle" accounts, they are just Amazon accounts. Why close the account? To do so removes your ability to get your books in the future, should you need to. There is no reason to close an account, just remove the credit card if that is what concerns you, but leave the account open.

You can make a small change to the address and one click is disabled. You need then to fully enter the card details on next purchase. It may not affect the purchasing via the Kindle; I think there is a setting to set a purchase limit in the Kindle settings.

I agree that your Amazon account should not be closed. If you close your Amazon account, you won't be able to create collections on your Kindle because it will no longer be registered.

I'd love to know why the OP wants to close down their Amazon account. Maybe disapproval of Amazon's tax-avoidance? But I'm just nosey.

Why would you want to close your account? You would not be able to buy any more books on that account. I agree that you should leave your account open.
