Kindle paperwhite unmounted by Calibre

I have a Kindle Paperwhite which has stopped working with Calibre. It used to work with an earlier version of Calibre, but I haven't used it for a while, and just discovered it won't work with my current Calibre, version 3.44.0 (I know this isn't the very latest but I prefer to stick with the version that comes with the Ubuntu distribution).

I'm on Linux. If I don't start Calibre, and connect through the USB port, the Kindle appears at /dev/sda and /dev/sda1, and I can manually mount it and access the contents. The Kindle shows the USB Drive Mode page.

If instead I start Calibre, Calibre recognizes the Kindle, reads the contents, and immediately after unmounts the Kindle. After that /dev/sda is present, but there is no /dev/sda1. The Kindle itself goes straight to its homepage. Calibre, however, doesn't seem to recognize that the Kindle has gone away (the device still appears on the dashboard), and Calibre still shows me the list of books on the Kindle. Of course, if I try to run a command (eg. copy book to Kindle) Calibre gives me an error message: it can't see /media/myname/kindle. Which is correct, because its gone away.

The Kindle is unmodified: I have never rooted it, I've only ever side-loaded books to it, and I have done a full reset and deleted *.calibre from it. Any suggestions for anything else I can try?

Thanks
Graham

This is a kernel bug. Either downgrade your kernel or upgrade calibre (newer versions of calibre contain a workaround for the kernel bug).

Thanks so much for the instant reply - and the fix! Do you happen to know which kernel versions are affected, or could you point me to a kernel bug report?

Thanks for Calibre, too!

search the calibre whats-new page for the word kernel and you will find references.

10th Generation Kindle not recognised

I had to purchase a new Kindle and now have a 10th generation version (not paperwhite).

When I plug the kindle into my PC, it shows as a new device, but when I switch on Calibre the device is not recognised and I cannot transfer books to the Kindle

Any ideas??

I'm getting a bit confused here. You posted that you are running calibre 4.14 running under Windows 10. Then you post a calibre log showing you are running calibre 1.8 x86 under Windows 8 x64 (not even 8.1!). A version of calibre that was released in Oct. 2013 if I recall correctly.

At this point, I don't think anyone is going to be able to offer any help other than trying to update your calibre install. As to what version of calibre will work with Windows 8? That's an interesting question.

No you are not. You are running Calibre 1.8 under Windows 8. You need to upgrade to Windows 10 64-bit (if your computer handles 64-bit Windows) and Calibre 4.15 (current as of this post).

Then Calibre will work with your Kindle.

From the calibre log, his computer is running Windows 8 x64 so that's not an issue.

What I do have an issue with is the two contradictory posts. Either the OP is unaware of what he is running or Murphy is having a lot of fun.

I've spent too many years in IT where the commonest cry for help is "I didn't do anything" to be comfortable with contradictory statements.

Speaking of IT, I remember going to help fix a computer that wasn't powering on. We asked if the computer was plugged in. We also asked if a different power socket was tried. Both answers yes. When I got there to see what was wrong, it was the socket of the power strip was not working and a different power socket was not tried.

As for the OP, something seems very off there given the massive differences between then OPs answer and the log. Why anyone would still be running Windows 8.0 and Calibre 1.8 is beyond reason.

One I loved where a cluster of 3 computers wasn't working. No power, monitors didn't power on, etc. IT was assured that all the computers were plugged in and a lamp plugged into the same outlet pair was working. I went to take a look and found that a lamp was plugged in, a power bar was plugged in but nothing was plugged into the power bar. Checked the other two power bars under the millwork and found they were plugged into each other. The usual response from the staff about not having touched anything.

Or why they would post that they were running calibre 4.14 and Windows 10 then post a log showing calibre 1.8/Windows 8.
