Calibre conversion needed for Kobo Forma

My current Calibre library is mostly for Sony PRS-T1 and T3 ereaders. I now need to support a Kobo Forma ereader.
When I convert a epub publication I use the Sony T3 profile currently. To be able to also support a Kobo ereader, what do I need to do?

Option 1: Convert all books to the Kepub format doubling the size of the database.
Option 2: use an other method that I do not know about.

Please advise.

The first thing to do is set the profile to Tablet as that won't change the size of any graphics if you do have to convert.

The second thing to do is just send all these ePub to your Forma without converting. You don't need to convert to KePub as you can read them as ePub. The ePub reader will give you better typesetting. More like what you were used to with your T3.

First: the database is the heart of Calibre. Adding extra formats to the LIBRARY will only make a tiny difference to the database (metadata.db)

Second: Kobos can show EPUB. So theoretically, you need do nothing.

Third: Using the Kobo Touch driver will convert that EPUB on the fly, to the device, to KEPUB and NOT add it to the Library

And last: You can convert to KEPUB and that will add to the Library, That increases the number of files (and file space occupied) in the Library.

  1. Minor nit: To convert to KEPUB on the fly, you need the Kobo Touch Extended driver not the Kobo Touch Driver.
  2. @grr50: I'd also suggest installing davidfor's excellent KoboUtilities plugin.
  3. And finally, quite a bit of the metadata such as series requires 2 connections to calibre, the first connection you send the book and when your Kobo imports it, the database entry for the book is created. The second connection will then update the metadata for that database entry. Under calibre's Preferences => Import/Export => Sending books to device, set metadata management to automatic.

The profile of the database that the Forma unit will be using is set to Sony T3. If I change the profile preference to Tablet, do I need to convert all the books with this new profile?

For the other database copies, for the other readers, if I change the profile to Tablet also, will the readers have issues?
