Kobo needs to step up their ad game

I made a search for “Kobo Inc.” on the iOS App Store the other day and was surprised to see Amazon’s Kindle ad up top. A similar search for Amazon did not reveal a Kobo ad. Instead, it showed Amazon ads. Kobo may have worked out a deal with Amazon to sell Clara HDs on Amazon.com, but they need to do more to spread the word about their wonderful ereader. At the very least they need to own their own searches. Don’t you think?

Where would you like to see Kobo pushing ads?

I tried on my iPad and only Kobo related Apps were shown, no Amazon add.

I tried several times, also with only the word Kobo. Sometimes there was an add, and sometimes not. Not always the same add.

Also, just typing the word Kobo got me many suggestions referring to Kobo : reading app, kobo inc, kobo app, kobo books, etc.

But no Kobo adds.

That’s interesting, but not surprising that our results would be different. Ad buys are usually by impressions, so once the amount has been reached, the ad stops showing.

I wonder where Kobo should advertise, however. I’m not convinced that Amazon’s Kindle ad is effective for the keyword “Kobo”. Nor would Kobo see good results doing the same thing to Amazon. People searching for something want that something.

Being the official Walmart ereader app is certainly good advertisement, though.

I wonder if they’d do better running more sign-up enticements than ads.

A search of the Apple App Store for Kobo brings up an ad for Audiobooks Audio Books, followed by the Kobo app, Kobo Inc., Walmart books, then Apple Books.

I get no Kindle or Amazon ad at all.

It depends who you are, who controls ad display, which region and what you last looked at.
It costs a fortune (or owning platform) to have high advert visibility.

I think you guys are missing the point. I happened to see a Kindle ad when I searched for Kobo and thought "Huh. Kobo needs to step up their ad game." Aside from product release videos on Youtube, does Kobo advertise at all? Where do you think they should focus their advertising efforts? Even Amazon advertises, and they virtually own the eReader community.
