Hi,
I'm a newbie to creating ebooks. I've followed the instructions and surprised how easy it is. However I'm stuck on something and after researching for most of yesterday evening and this morning I have no answer. I'm very happy with how Calibre has no issue with most of the South Asian once I embed them (discovered this yesterday). However, there is a big issue with Tamil and Urdu text. It's own viewer for epub and mobi is perfect, however when I export the files, Adobe Digital Designs does not displays odd characters for the Tamil and doesn't even recognise the Urdu text, (Image name 1). The Readera app on my android phone misses out a few vital lines in the Tamil characters for epub, and does the same for .mobi and also messes with the Urdu text, otherwise it's perfect. (I've scribbles 're' and k for Kindle and epub on the images). The Kindle app on my phone does the exact same thing with Tamil and has rearranged the Urdu. For some reason the Hindi is highlighted and it also renders some of the text dark grey when in black background mode, (I've scribbles k on the image). I've also attached how the original should look ('or' on image) I'm hoping someone can help and also hope this is the right category. Is it possibly anything to do with the opf file? Do I need to include this in the upload. Note: I am going to make this ebook available from my own website and not any other external website, like Amazon. A fascinating problem, I hope someone can provide a solution. I also hope you don't mind my asking a tangential question: Isn't it the first of the two separate lines of Gujarati text (or at least Gujarati script) that is displayed highlighted in the specified black image? The Hindi (devanagari) doesn't appear to be highlighted.

Yes, well noticed. It is Gujarati not Hindi. Writing whilst hungry and cooking not a good idea. Hope I get a solution as well. Last edited by SofAmina; 10-06-2019 at 09:52 AM. |

Amazon only recently added support for Indian languages to the Kindle platform and they are supported only when KFX format is used. Urdu is not supported, but Arabic is. I am not sure whether or not mixtures of these languages within a single book are allowed.

Thanks. I'll lookup KFX format. I have seen any with more than one South Asian font, but I wanted to try.

So far:
Odd rendering of Tamil characters in Adobe Digital Editions not resolved. Highlighted Gujarati text was just a formatting error on my side. I was curious so I converted to AZW3 and transferred this to my Kindle app on my android phone. The Tamil characters worked perfectly. I'm reading up on AZW3 and I think it's DRM protected. I ideally did not want this. If anybody can shed some light on the Adobe Digital Editions issue and opinions on AZW3? (And I've been hungry for a little while, but wanted to get this resolved. Time to cook and eat). |
