Ebook reader v4 - start time and default size

Congratulations on Calibre 4.0. The work that has gone into this release is evident to anyone who has worked on software. Well done.

With that as background, I am struggling a bit with the new ebook reader. It looks beautiful, and will be easier perhaps for those who are reading whole books page by page and not doing research. But I miss the controls a lot and am hoping that there are keyboard shortcuts for the old functions. Will be experimenting with this.

Two questions:

1. The new reader seems noticeably slower to load on my machine, though this could be because it is doing more "behind the scenes" to set up a book for first time reading. Are there any tweaks to speed this up?

[Solved by reboot] 2. Every time the reader opens, it is too small on my laptop screen. It is a pain to resize it every time. Is there a way to specify a default size and position for opening the reader?

Thank you for Calibre.

Alec

It should have remembered the last used size and position.
What OS?
and yes, it is a bit slower to open, but seems faster to navigate (from the TOC)

In the miscellaneous section of the viewer preferences is a setting to remember window size. And pretty much every control in the old viewr is present in th new one, including with keyboard shortcuts. The biggest eception is a scrollbar which is on my TODO list as an option.

> What OS

Was not trying to be difficult. Linux Mint 18.3 with XFCE 4.12

> In the miscellaneous section of the viewer preferences is a setting to remember window size.

This setting only works for the current book. What would be helpful would be if the size and position were remembered across books.

>pretty much every control in the old viewr is present in th new one, including with keyboard shortcuts.

That is good news. Thank you.

Not sure what you mean, with that setting whenever you open a new viewer instance it opens with the same size as it had when you last closed it. Irrespective of what book you have open.

That is not happening on my system. Every time a different book is opened, the size and position revert to the original default.

I cannot replicate that, steps I tried:

1) Enable the tick box to remember last used windows size nd position
2) Resize the viewer window
3) Quit the viewer
4) Start the viewer, it has the size from step 2

Not sure what else to say. I can reproduce it on my system. If others find this and have the problem, then it's a bug. Otherwise, we'll let it go. For now due to the startup speed with each new book, I will plan to use an alternative viewer.

Might be a WM issue not correctly following whatever hints Qt is setting?

Can't reproduce on my end w/ KWin, FWIW.

Quick update:

As a last ditch attempt I rebooted the machine. Now the size and position are remembered across books. Not sure why a reboot was required, but am very happy that this is resolved.
