Help needed to repair Calibre installation
Hi all --
I have been running Calibre for some two years very successfully. My collection of nearly 300 books was nicely classified and everything was satisfactory. From time to time, the splash-screen offering an upgrade was presented. I have always accepted this and run the binary installer which has always worked correctly. Yesterday (4th October), I found the option to install version 4.0 but when I ran the installer, error messages were presented and the whole system was corrupted so that I could not run Calibre. I tried repeating the download, de-installing Calibre, deleting the Calibre folder from the "/opt" directory but none of these operations has improved matters. It would seem that version 4.0 is not compatible with my system (64-bit LinuxMint) so, I have tried to regress back to version 3.39, which worked perfectly. I have visited the Calibre site but I cannot find a binary installer, so I cannot install the program. Fortunately, the Calibre library is intact and I also have a backup of this. It would seem that version 4.0 is not compatible with my system. Unfortunately, I do not have sufficient knowledge of Linux to know what is wrong or how to correct this. I guess that I may be restricted to version 3.39 (which worked perfectly) so I will accept this limitation but, again, I have no knowledge of how to install this. I cannot find any way out of this mess so can anyone please be so kind as to advise me how to proceed. As is noted on the linux download page, you need GLIBC 2.18 or higher
and libstdc++.so.6.0.21 (from gcc 5.4.0) or higher to run calibre. This is approximately three year old software. If your distro does not provide it, then you should stick with calibre 3.48 until it does. Instructions on how to downgrade calibre are on the Linux download page https://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux |

To Peter T & kovid --
Thank you both for your replies. My needs are very simple - - I just need a reader. So the increased sophistication of calibre is nice to have but not essential. I would like to stress that this conclusion is purely a reflection of what I want to do with this software and is in no way a criticism of calibre itself, which is excellent. Thank you both once again, Best regards, beric |

You are running an obsolete OS version, which is no longer supported and does not receive security updates. The Calibre not working is the least of what you should worry about.
