This weekend I have been working my way through a lot of older books and adding metadata. I cleaned up the title and put the series in the correct series slot - I don't like it in the title itself. After I had finished a lot of them, I then used bulk editing to add them to my custom shelf column and mark them read or unread. To do that I'd sorted them by tag and then was able to select a group to put on the same shelf. When I finished that and resorted by title name, I found a lot of them had reverted to something like "Riley Page Mystery -01- Once taken" But the Title sort slot is still just Once taken, is it's supposed to be.
Any ideas? I should add that I only do very basic organizing with Calibre, have no idea how or why/when to edit books, etc. I did follow the directions last year to make shelves for my Kobo using custom columns that's it. Last edited by catsknit; 09-29-2019 at 07:27 PM. Reason: added info |

Reverting is not something Calibre can do.
Do you have a Sync enabled on you Library folder? ![]() Did you happen to click the Brown book icon in the Metadat Edit window. That reads THE BOOKs metadata. (or you ticked the 'Set metadata' in MDE Bulk mode) |

He means Blue
But that icon extracts a cover, the one below it extracts metadata Where is it wrong (i.e "Riley Page Mystery -01- Once taken") if its on your device, it maybe that you've not updated the device metadata, or your Send to Device template is putting the series in the title. None of these books have been transferred to my device yet. Haven't even had it connected since I started working on this last weekend.
Below is a screenshot (hopefully) showing what i mean. Obviously I had already put the title in as I wanted it, b/c the Title Sort shows it correctly and it's pink b/c it doesn't agree with the Title box. Also, the tags were stripped out somehow. |

My guess is that at some time you've unchecked the Show this message again checkbox on the You will lose all unsaved changes, are you sure? popup.
I think that means you would not have gotten that message if you exited the dialogue via anything other than the OK, Next, or Previous buttons, e.g. Cancel, Red X top right, Window menu->Close - or their keyboard equivalents - Esc, Alt+Space C, Alt+F4 etc. You can turn them all on again clicking the Preferences->Behaviour->Reset all disabled confirmation dialogs button. FWIW: I find it much easier to massage the file names before I add to have the right Title and Author, then add the book into an Intake library, then get the rest of the metadata 'fixed' (I don't download title and author), and then Copy with delete (Move) the book to the target library. I've never clicked the Set Metadata from book button. Didn't know it existed until this thread and I went to check. Same with the bulk editing.

![]() If there is a field for it, that is where it belongs. That way, searches work well. Save, Send and the Metadata plugboard are where you fudge things to make a DEVICE more usable. The original remains unchanged. Send to Device and Save to folder, tweak the Filename (used by some bookshelves). Metadata Plugboard is for Metadata based bookshelves like the Kindle (where the filename is just letters and numbers) that read the internals from the book |

@catsknit - where and when did you get the publisher, comments etc. I have a vague memory of getting a situation like you have if I did some editing, then downloaded metadata, without saving my change - or some similar sequence. Now I do any metadata downloading first, save, then do any editing and save again.
Here's a series of screen shots that shows what I probably would have done (some of my buttons may look different to yours because I've customised them). I assume you started off with this: I would have cut the series data from Title (to clipboard), then clicked the to Title Sort button, then paste the series data I cut from Title, then adjust the series data After that I would have entered tags etc and clicked OK. @BetterRed, that is similar to what I do, except that I always download the metadata first to get a book blurb on the side so I know what tags to use, and may or may not choose a new cover at same time. Then I clean up the title, series, etc. The only thing I am doing differently recently from before, is that under Preferences, Metadata Download, I unchecked tag download because I was typically getting 4-10 tags that i would never use like gritty, women, psychological, cozy, etc. I prefer to use 1-2 tags per book and they mostly correspond to what genre/subgenre I think of them as.
So now I get no tags downloaded (I know you can change the number which download but I prefer to just do my own) Other than that I can't think of anything I have changed recently. and yes, the whole point of this is that I DON"T want the series info in the title Last edited by catsknit; 10-02-2019 at 08:08 PM. Ah ha - in metadata edit config I have Author and Title unchecked, I set those in the file name before I add the book. Quote:
I'm not saying you must do a save after downloads, I'm just saying that's what I do. I think I started doing it as described when I had similar problems as yourself, which was soon after I started using calibre in Mar 2012. ![]() ![]() (I also did not understand that the OP was doing a metadata download AFTER setting the metadata) ![]() I use the ctrl-D method, The new (proposed) data appears in the Left, the old, on the Right. You can click the arrow in the middle to keep (copies) you old FIELD value ( ![]() Blank on the Left are Auto-filled from the right. no need to click. IMHO it would be nice to have a 'Block' option for when the right was undesired and the Left is now blank (saves a bit of pre-cleaning) |
