Format missing when adding books

Using Win 10 and calibre 3.48

I have unsuccessfully looked in a lot of places for a solution so have decided to write to the experts to see if you can help.

I tried to clean up my calibre library and so consolidated all by ebooks in one folder. I then added everything from the new folder. However hundreds of them have no formats. If I add the books individually they work fine. I'm trying to do this without the mammoth task of checking, re-adding and deleting orphan files for each book individually.

The Quality check plug in doesn't improve matters.

Would it make sense to delete all books and start again or would it help to uninstall and start again from scratch?

Please be kind as i fully expect someone to point out the blindingly obvious - I plead my old age!!

Preferences: Adding Books: Adding actions (tab) has some controls on what to do when an existing title is found: (tick Auto Merge and select what to do )

If you DO get 2 entries and want to join (Merge) Them. Select the target FIRST, then select the other(s): Tap 'M" Note:There is no sanity check. You can merge 2 unrelated books. USE CARE
