Hello there.

I suspect the message at the top, suggesting I post an intro, won't go away until I do.

I'm a longtime ebook reader (erm, a few years); I've been reading them on PDAs, but all three of of my Cliés finally died this year (two screen death; one battery that won't recharge anymore), and I'd been pondering getting a larger ebook reader.

My husband, who wants to wean me away from buying five-year-old tech that someone else is tired of, bought me a Sony reader, which is, I gather, in the process of being delivered.

I *like* the small screen. I *like* that I can read it in the car without turning on an extra light. I suspect I'll grow to like the larger screen, and the ability to sort books into categories (which the software I was using on the Palm OS was horrible at).

I don't think I'll wind up buying many books from sites like Sony's, or Amazon; I have an intense dislike for DRM, and I have dialup internet. On the other hand, I spend insane amounts of time downloading free ebooks and DRM-free ebooks like the ones from Baen and Tor, and individual author websites, and sometimes reformatting them into a shape/layout I like better.

I'm looking forward to years of happy reading with my new reader.

Welcome to the forum ElfWreck. Don't tjrow away the Clies just yet, maybe you can take the battery from one with a bad screen and put it into the one with a bad battery. Not something to try with a working model but it can be done. My Clie screen died and I played with it. You can (with some work) remove the battery yourself.

Besides the back light, the small size makes it great to carry in a pocket (or purse if you have one). I still use my Clie replacement (a Palm TX) but also have an old Sony PRS-500 and mostly use my Cybook Gen3 for reading. It's good to have both an eink bigger screen and a pocket size with back light.

If you like SF, try Baen. All their books are DRM free and there is a nice "free library" to check out authors you've never read (or those you have read). They have all the correct formats for most readers.

Hi Elfwreck and welcome to the Forum. I read on a iPaq for years but really prefer the Sony. And you can get a clip on light or the Sony flat light for dark spots.

Be sure and let us know how you like the Sony once you get it

I have three different Clie models--one B&W, which runs on AAA batteries (screendeath), one color (battery won't hold a charge at all), one extra-thin (screen glitchy; flashes too much). Three different kinds of battery; three slightly different arrangement of buttons and dials. I loved that they all worked with Palm OS4. (The extra-thin is, I believe, the Peg-SJ30, but I could be mixing it up with another.)

The complex naming schemes are why I gave up on them; I couldn't figure out what was "a little bit of an upgrade." Also can't figure out what other PDAs have the features I most cared about, which had more to do with the exact placement of the "click for next page" button than anything listed on the review sites. Bleh. I'd love another one, but I'm not spending any effort to find one; since they're entirely unsupported anymore, they're risky tech.

I'm familiar with Baen; I have several of their ebooks.
