Kindle DX stuck on critical battery screen
I have a Kindle DX that hasn't been used in a few years. I decided to try to get some use out of it but it seems to be stuck on the critical battery screen and will not turn on. The little yellow charge light does turn on and turns off after a few hours.
First, I tried a few different USB cables and chargers including wall and my computer. The DX does not mount when connected to a computer. Next, I tried contacting Amazon and they offered to give me a partial refund of $0.00 if I send it back to them. ![]() Then I started checking out forum post which suggested to press the manual reset button on the top inside of the tablet. That did not work either (tried holding it down for various times including combinations with the Power and Home button). I figured the battery is shot from sitting too long. I decided to buy a new one off ebay that was labeled OEM and that didn't work either. I am out of ideas unless if there is a way I can connect to the serial port inside and reset it that way. Does anyone else have any ideas? I want to use this mainly for the display in some electronic projects. I am pretty comfortable with software and circuits. |

Have you left it on a wall charger for 48 hours?

Yes, I have left it on wall charge for about 3 days with both batteries but the yellow light goes off after a few hours. I noticed the yellow light is very fickle about which charger I use.

Then I would venture a guess your battery is completely dead.

My daughter had something similar happen when she tried to turn on her PSP after a few months of non use. Apparently, since the battery was without charge for an extended period of time the battery died and would no longer charge. Of course this happened a few weeks after the warranty expired.

I had a problem with a drained battery in a Kindle Keyboard. I discovered that I had left the 3G on, and that, as soon as the battery got enough charge, the 3G would drain it again. I was able to turn on the Kindle as soon as the charging light went green and turn of wireless. I never had the problem again. I suspect that older Kindles keep wireless active when in sleep mode (not if the device is actually turned off). Reports are that newer Kindles don't have this problem.

here's a way, albeit somewhat stupid, to try to revive the battery:
1. have the unit in a ziploc bag, squeeze out the air and put in the freezer section of your refrigerator for a period of 24 hours. 2. try to charge the unit again with wall outlet. |

Tried the above suggestions, still doesn't work. Both batteries seem to not charge even though the yellow light comes on (but never turns green and shuts off after 2 hours)

While charging, can you turn it on and get to your home page? If so, use menu to verify if wifi is on. This is what happened to my Kindle 3 -- as soon as if took a little charge, wifi would go on and drain the battery. I got it to turn on while charging, and I was able to turn off the wifi, then it took a full charge. But I'll bet you've checked this out already...

Keep in mind that buying a "new" battery may not result in you receiving a battery that is significantly younger than the one that came with your device. The clock is ticking on these batteries the minute they're produced. So unless new DX batteries are a hot commodity, an OEM replacement may just be as old (and unable to hold a charge) as the one that came with the device. It may have been sitting on a shelf degrading for all these years until you bought it "new."
I'd look into a third-party battery replacement, myself (if such a thing exists). |

It is also possible that something else has gone wrong with the device besides the battery.
