jailbreak kt2 5.11.1.1 but cannot install KUAL
Hello! I am new to mobileread forum.
I want to jailbreak my KT2 running firmware 5.11.1.1 I find this thread from google, it seems that I can jailbreak using serial jailbreak. I follow this tutorial I do part 1-4 successfully. I see the word **** JAILBREAK **** appear at the bottom of my KT2. And this is the message from putty: ============================ Welcome to Kindle! kindle login: root ################################################# # N O T I C E * N O T I C E * N O T I C E # ################################################# Rootfs is mounted read-only. Invoke mntroot rw to switch back to a writable rootfs. ################################################# [root@kindle root]# cd /mnt/us [root@kindle us]# sh jb.sh info jb_install:mount_root_rw:: Mounting rootfs rw info jb_install:install_update_key:: Copying the jailbreak updater key info jb_install:install_fw54_exec_userstore_flag:: Creating the userstore exec flag file info jb_install:install_bridge:: Installing the jailbreak bridge info jb_install:install:: Setting up MKK persistent copy info jb_install:install:: Setting up RP persistent copy update_to_display: update_mode=PARTIAL, wave_mode=257 inverted=0 [root@kindle us]# reboot reboot: command arguments: no_sync=0, force=0, poweroff=0, exit_only=0, args=77072 [root@kindle us]# Broadcast message from root@kindle (/dev/ttymxc0) at 0:07 ... The system is going down for reboot NOW! ============================ So I believe I jailbreak my KT2 successfully. I try to install KUAL following the part 5 but fail. I download the latest KUAL package KUAL-v2.7.20-gc2948b8-20190604.tar.xz from this download thread I put the file KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 into the Documents directory of my KT2. However, I cannot see the Kindle Launcher after restarted. I know this message is quite long. But I really need help! Can anybody help me? Thanks! |

You'd install booklet KUAL which is under the name of KUAL (coplate) in the same thread.

After extracted the file, I put the Update_KUALBooklet_054f614_install.bin into the top level of the KT2 drive. I unplug the device and try to install the file but the Update Your Device option under the setting -> device options is still gray. (I guess I don't need to reboot the device as the .bin file will be deleted after reboot.) I wonder if I jailbreak correctly? The firmware is still 5.11.1.1. Is the new firmware block the installation of other outdated .bin file? Any suggestions? Thanks! |

You need MR Package Installer from the same thread to install bin packages.

Under the Usage paragraph, the author says: It's fairly simple: upload all the update packages you need (in one go ) to the mrpackages directory, which you'll find at the root of your Kindle over USB if you installed this correctly . Eject & unplug your Kindle, then click the Install MR Packages button in the KUAL Helper menu. So it goes back to the first question that I cannot install KUAL ![]() |

That's what you get for following outdated instructions
![]() Install the JB Hotfix, the standalone jb script used for serial installs doesn't include all the bells and whistles needed for this to work. I think it's even mentioned somewhere ;D. |

You mention under Important notice for KOA/KT3/KOA2/PW4/KT4 owners, as well as *anything* that might be running FW >= 5.9.x: Finally, I can see the KUAL item after installed the hotfix (K5 JailBreak Hotfix | JailBreak-1.15.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zip), MR Package Installer (MR Package Installer | kual-mrinstaller-1.7.N-r16043.tar.xz) and KUALBootlet (KUAL (coplate) | KUAL-054f614-20190601.tar.xz). I want to ask one more import thing, can I do all the other hacks through usb afterward and desolder the serial wires? I think it is quite dangerous to let the circuit board expose Thanks NiLuJe and hius07 ![]() ![]() |

Let me make it clear, is there other way to login as root to the kindle's linux besides using serial method? Is it possible to use usb connection?

If you can mount the Kindle as USB mass storage and have done the jailbreak, you do not need the serial port any longer. You can install everything by copying over USB. Once you have USB networking installed and can confirm ssh works, you no longer need USB mass storage if you don not want to use it. |
