Looking to replace Kindle DX
I've had a Kindle DX for a long time, but yesterday it gave up the ghost. I wasn't too depressed about it until I started trying to find a good replacement for it.
All these new larger readers are so expensive and chock full of fancy features! I just want to read in comfort on an e-ink screen :c It's also been confusing and difficult trying to find information on options outside of Amazon or Kobo. I'd really like something of a similar screen size - I was able to see a (powered down) Kobo Forma, and it seemed like it would still be uncomfortably small. I don't want to take notes or use the internet or anything, just read. Is there anything more affordable at that size than a Likebook Mimas or Boox Note? |

Barnes and Noble just introduced a Nook with a larger screen for about $200. Unfortunately, it is sold out. Maybe make do with a used device until you can find something that fits your needs and budget.

https://www.newpower99.com/Amazon_Ki...phite%203g.htm (There seems a couple listings for Kindle DXes at Newpower, so (if you do decide to get a battery) make sure you check the specs and get the right one.) There's also the possibility of buying a used DX on eBay or Shop Goodwill. There's currently one on Shop Goodwill that may go for a reasonable price ... https://www.shopgoodwill.com/Item/70570034 |

@HotPinkSocks: There are some used Kindle DXs for sale or you might want to check into used ereaders from Onyx or Boyue if you want a newer device with the screen size of the DX without breaking the bank. Last edited by DNSB; 06-23-2019 at 03:42 PM. |

There is a refurbished white DX on ebay at the moment, but I'm leery of getting such expensive things secondhand =\
It seems to be the brains of the kindle that are dead, rather than the battery - it's been getting slower and slower, and froze completely midway through starting up. Upon holding the power button, the screen went blank instead, and has since refused to do anything more. I suppose for now it might be best to just get a comparatively cheap refurbished DX again. I just wonder how much longer a new-to-me unit would last, being fairly old models now. |

If the Kobo Forma is too small for you, then the Kindle Oasis will be too. Unfortunately, Amazon does not make a larger Kindle right now. Aside from another DX, a large Boox or Likebook will be your best option. The new Likebook Alita, coming out soon, is supposed to be even better than the Mimas. However, pricing is still unknown, and I imagine it will be somewhere in the $400.00 to $500.00 range. Your most affordable option may be a 9.7 inch Onyx Boox device.

You might be happier with the DX-G, which has a better screen. The Dx-G is grey-colored. Check here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=152331 |

The DXG screen is fine, but with reading glasses, it's inferior even for PDFs to the Kobo Aura H2O original.
The DXG comes apart easily to replace a battery, as does a Kindle Keyboard. I don't know how easy the original DX is to open. I use a horrible 10" LCD tablet for PDFs, Kobo Aura H2O original at home and the Sony PRS350 when travelling. I'm tempted to a 10" approx eink at under £300 for PDFs. The 7" to 8" sizes are not enough of change of screen to my 6.8" kobo. I gave my Kindle DXG 3G to someone with Macular degeneration and got one of the last PW3 last November and a Kindle Keyboard (same last official FW level as the DXG,) simply to compatibility test mobi, dual mobi and azw I write/create as well as have a valid serial number to convert Amazon purchases that aren't on Smashwords to epub. I read all my Amazon books on my PRS350 and/or H2O. I have a Nook Simple Touch, a Kobo Touch (horrible ghosting screen) and phone apps for testing ePubs too. There is an ePub validator and desktop viewers, but certain issues of font sizes, images and layouts are only obvious using a wide variety of real devices. Anyone still use Palm Pilots or the related pdb app on Win CE devices or other PDAs for ereading? |

I've ended up going with the Pocketbook InkPad 3 - smaller than I wanted, but there was no way I could afford another 10" screen. The InkPad has a nicer ratio than the Kobo 8" I saw, which I feel is weirdly wide. With luck, that one will last me another 5+ years, and maybe after that I'll be rich enough for a 10" :P |
