Is it impossible to jailbreak a kindle paperwhite4 running firmware 5.11.2?
Hello! I created an account here just to post this so please excuse my idiocy.
I am trying to jailbreak my kindle paperwhite 4 firmware 5.11.2. Basically, the newest instructions I can find for jailbreaking a KPW4 requires it be running firmware 5.10.0.2. (https://www.ereader-palace.com/how-t...-2018-release/) I'm also curious to know what the consequences will be if I just used the firmware 5.10.0.2. instructions? I've never jailbroken a kindle before. I just traded in my old (non-jailbroken) kindle for the newest one and basically doubled my calibre library in my excitement. At this point, I have too many books to manage without implementing collections. I downloaded the calibre plugin kindle collection using the very simple instructions from an article which failed to let me know how I'd have to jailbreak my kindle in order to "update my collections" in LibrarianSync. So if I can't do this, I just spent days manually labelling all 700 of my books for their collection for no reason. ![]() I'm very grateful that there is a community here who is smarter than me. THANK YOU! |

If you look at this thread in the Kindle Developer's Corner, you can see the requirements and the steps to do the jailbreak. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=312489
Essentially, if you upgrade your Kindle to anything *at all* other than the firmware it comes with, you can not jailbreak. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. However, if all you want to do is use your computer to add all of your books to collections, you can do that from your Manage My Kindle page on Amazon. Even if you didn't buy your books from Amazon, you can upload them to your Kindle cloud, either by using a program called Send to Kindle, or by emailing them. You can even use Calibre to email them for you. Just make sure to set the output format to Mobi(both) so that you can use the custom fonts and font enhancements on your Kindle. Shari |

This is related to why I no longer post what I've read to Social Media or Goodreads (Amazon owned). Why should I help exploitive companies to update their marketing profiles? If you add books a few at a time via USB there is no difficulty in adding them to Collections/Categories and creating those as long as the Kindle is registered. Amazon ought to be: 1) Allowing people to create collections without registering. 2) Allowing people to switch off sync collections with Cloud. Their present methods might be illegal in EU unless there is adequate auditing of privacy. Ignore warning messages and only connect WiFi to look up WiKipedia info in a book. Pick Download to PC and transfer via USB when purchasing from Amazon. Buying an ebook reader or ebooks does not give Amazon any legal right to collect the information that they collect (in EU anyway and morally elsewhere), even if they have T&C that claim they have the right. It's exploitive and immoral. |

Thank you for the advice on using Amazon. I knew about that, but I don't think I'll use it. I'll probably just use calibre to find which books I want to read and then search for them on my kindle. Not a perfect system, but I feel more comfortable doing that than uploading all my books to amazon. |

I share your concerns! Thank you for your response, but I'm curious as to what you mean by this quote? I'm using calibre to organize my library and using their plugin to make a collection. I am adding a few at a time, but when I save those books under a collection it says I have to 'Update collections" via LibrarianSync to load my changes. If there is a different and simpler way to get that done, I'd love to know.

@kds13e: I assume @FrustratedReader meant that using the vanilla, on-device collection managemeant features (or whatever actually passes as that these days ;p).
As for the JB query, I wouldn't get my hopes up. But, yes, as a rule, updating will only make it worse. Note that 5.11.2 is currently the latest FW version available anyway. Last edited by NiLuJe; 06-30-2019 at 05:30 PM. |

I shall re-read the Calibre instructions. I'm not happy though that Amazon tracks what collections you have and how many items are in them even if you don't email files to "the Cloud". There ought to be a setting to turn that off. Also having four different MAKES of ereader and a selection of Apps from different developers, and managing my wife's Kindle content the concept of Sync is useless to me. Anyway a search for a phrase is faster than syncing two devices for reading position. Calibre tells me if a book is on the device, though I must investigate how to see if the device book is an older version. I write. Also I proof read other writer's work on my Kobo H2O, so version control can be an issue. I do display 'Last Modified' in Calibre, add the version to the title and have a spreadsheet too. |

Yeah, agreed, I pretty much navigate my library by Search, Kobo or Kindle, and it's infinitely easier to deal with
![]() Granted, the saner metadata handling of the Kobo helps here. (I still spend a few seconds cleaning up tags and setting up a "main" category tag (which I flag with a distinct prefix, in my case, a +, a remnant of my Kindle Collections setup), but it's now mainly because otherwise an endless list of tags in Calibre annoys me ;p). Also has the advantage of not bogging down the reader, because neither Amazon nor Kobo has a terribly efficient collection implementation... Last edited by NiLuJe; 07-01-2019 at 11:20 AM. |
