Slow connection - which mysteriously recovers

So, take a look at that picture. It's lying by the way. That's me trying to copy the "KoboReader.sqlite" file from the Glo HD to my hard drive. I've been waiting for about an hour, and it'll be another hour at least before it's done.

I connect the Glo HD on USB every week or two, and this happens every time. After the file copy is finished, I will open the file in an SQLite tool, compress and copy it back. That will take just a few seconds.

Thing is, after doing this, I have no problems. I can copy files back and forward, connect without issues in Calibre, everything's fine. I can even disconnect the USB, reconnect, and there will still be no issues.

I've tried several USB cables. No difference.

Basically, this is my procedure whenever I want to fire up Calibre:
- Connect via USB
- Copy the kobo db to my PC (>2 hours)
- Compress it
- Copy it back.
- Open Calibre.

Weird huh?

I can't think of a reason for that to happen. I have calibre doing a backup of the database for every connection, and that only takes a few seconds. The Glo HD is the device I have most trouble with. It is very fussy about the cable and won't work properly with the cable I use for all the other devices. And just testing, it took 12 seconds to back it up and zip it. And it's size is about 150MB.

How big is the database? That will affect the time taken to copy the file. Does the antivirus scan it? That could also slow things down.

And for curiosity, how much space does the compress recover? I haven't seen it do enough to really make it worth doing frequently.

Thanks for the reply.

My db is about 70MB, so not that big. Compress usually recovers <1MB. I haven't tried disabling the AV, but I can't imagine it making much difference. I'll try it next time (no point now as it's working fine of course).

It is odd. It's been getting progressively worse for several months now.

Regarding the cable. Like most people I have a pile of micro usb cables - trouble is I can't remember which is the correct one .

David; I also see wide fluctuations in the USB transfer rate; with no common factors I can see.
