Develop patch for missing certificate Kindle DX
Many Kindle DX users cannot register through the device once it was factory reset. The dump file ";dm" showing that after factory reset, Kindle DX unable to find its certificate from the amazon server. The updated firmware patch from Amazon website seemed did not solve this problem. Amazon themselves has been very slow and probably won't help to solve the issue. I think it might be possible to copy certificates from Kindle DX 2.5.8 that still able to register and deregister to Amazon and create patch from it.
Would there be any Kindle DX user who able to register and deregister their Kindle DX from the device that willing to help? I need ";dm" file and probably certificate files from a fully working Kindle DX. Or maybe someone knows a better idea to do this? Thanks Last edited by DeKuns; 05-01-2019 at 10:02 AM. |

I see in the ";dm" file that factory reset Kindle DX try to find a file from Amazon server:
Quote:
ESN=is the ICCID MDN=IMSI Number Is anyone with a better knowledge know what does it means? Do the server did not have that file anymore or simply something wrong with their https certificate? I accessed the same URL from Chrome browser and it state something wrong with the certificate "invalid certificate", it is the guttenberg certificate. Last edited by DeKuns; 05-10-2019 at 11:15 AM. |

Amazon probably canceled that service.
Get used to it, 3G is EoL with most carriers. |

I understand about 3G is EoL in many countries. But the fact that browsing the Kindle Store is no problem on Kindle DXG although it is not registered might prove that the Amazon 3G contract to carriers is not ending yet. I see that their Guttenberg certificate in their Kindle DX security update file stamped until January 2020. That is probably the day Amazon will kill their 3G connection.

Hmm... The K2 is 3G-only also, is anyone having connection problems with the K2? Include the first four characters of the device serial number in your report please. (All run some (probably different) build of 2.5.8 so duplicating the DXG sim card and using it in your DX should take care of the problem for now at least.) K2 was Sprint. reports of K2 connectivity loss started showing up here some time ago.
DXG was ATT. |

Then the DX was Sprint also. Amazon purchased service from ATT for the DXG because Sprint did not have support for International M2M service. The same Radio/Modem is in both the DX and the DXG, so for continued 3G support (from ATT) so only the SIM card needs to be changed (it is in a standard socket, easy to remove once the back is off). But as mentioned in the posts above, that would only be a short term solution. A better solution would be to convert the older Kindles to 4G-LTE with auto fallback to 3G-GSM or 3G-(something). I recently purchased "standard" Radio/Modem for my laptop that does just that. It is physically too big a card to fit in the Kindle, but qualcom does make such Radio/Modem cards in the Kindle size. The (very few) Kindle models with 4G-LTE Radio/Modems with fallback to 3G might be used as a guide to coming up with what would work to update the (many) older, 3G-only Kindle models. But at least two of those models are the "impossible to open" models. |

Hmm.. interesting! But probably we are too far by considering hardware modification to make 4G-LTE enable Kindle DXG.
Would the problem on Kindle DXG is as simple as missing certificate after a factory reset and Kindle DXG cannot retrieve this from the server causing: Quote:

If we are lucky, then maybe we can produce a similar file by hexing to comply with our Kindle ID, ESN, and MDN. Then we could discuss 4G-LTE modification to anticipate Amazon move to kill 3G in January 2020. Last edited by DeKuns; 05-10-2019 at 01:11 AM. |

*) The "hardware modification" is a plug-in card.
*) Certificates are cryptographically signed, lots of luck changing the content of one of them. *) Why don't you just look on your DXG which you posted as working? |

So I think the 3G hardware is okay. The problem is only a missing certificate. Hmm.. |

It seemed that Amazon firmware update for Kindle DXG somehow did not contain the right factory reset routine. Once a factory reset initiated it will mess with the certificate rendered it to missing, etc. For Amazon to listen, it needs more Kindle 2i, Kindle DXi, Kindle DXG owners to file these problem to Amazon CS under unable to register through the device after factory reset. Kindle Gen 1-3 are probably the device that affected. |

So the problem is only for Gen 1-2. Because of the problem, I am experimenting with Gen 2 Kindle but with Gen 3 firmware hack. I try to register through firmware 3.3, the problem is persistent. So it is not a firmware problem, but more likely a missing certificate required for registration after factory reset that Amazon server cannot return. However, I will continue to firmware 3.4.2. If it is successful to return the registration, then it might be SSL/TLS problem.
In Amazon Forum itself, now emerge that people unable to de-register their Gen 2 device although 3G is full bars. So there is a break in the linkage between Gen 2 Kindle and Amazon server currently. It also means any patch will less likely to work. Only Amazon that can fix it. When the device tried to connect to Amazon server for a certificate, the device send its serial number and some other related numbers. In the debug file, the server returns "file not found". All Kindle Gen 2 data might be removed either intentionally or accidently. May be this is a routine server maintanance because the early Gen 2 is now 10 years old—only Kindle DXG the latest sale is in 2014—. Last edited by DeKuns; 05-17-2019 at 11:51 AM. |
