Library on an external hard-drive (OSX)

Hi community,
I am new. I registered to ask this question. I would like to transfer my library to an external hard-drive as it is big. I need more space for other things on the computer.
I am running MacOSX, calibre portable is not available.
Is it sufficient to copy the whole folder to the external hard-drive and that's it?
Or should I have two libraries, one of the computer, one one the hard drive, and run rsync to transfer new books to the hard drive?
Thank you for your advise.

Any Local attached (USB,esata...) drive is good.
It is best, if you can lock in the drives letter (Windows disc management) or mount point so it never changes regardless of the USB port used.

(should apply to all OS. Calibre, Server all MUST be SHUT DOWN)
1) create an EMPTY folder on the new drive (the folder name will be your new Libraries name )
2) MOVE the entire contents of the old Library into the new folder

Start Calibre. You will see an empty Library or a 'not found' message.
On the Library Icon: Switch/Create: USE EXISTING: <select the new homes foldername>

I would do this:

After closing calibre copy the library to the new location with a different name e.g. "My New Library", then start calibre and configure the 'new' library via Switch/create library.

When you're satisfied the 'new' library is working as expected, use the Remove library feature to remove the 'old' library from calibre, and then use Finder to delete it.
