Bored with ereaders?
Has anyone gotten bored with their ereaders? The novelty factor of reading books on an ereader seems to be wearing off and now I started purchasing "real books" again.

For me, the novelty wore off quickly, boredom never set in, and the pain of dealing with "real books" is gradually getting worse. My fist dedicated e-reader was the K2 10 years ago. The time I spend reading books has increased over that time after having declined for many years after I left school.

Nope. I never used my ereader because of the "novelty" of it. I use it because I can change the font size, and I can carry many many books all at once, and because if I want a new book, I can generally get it in 30 seconds or less, without having to leave my house.
The only way I would go back to paper is if some catastrophe happened and all electronics were rendered useless. Shari |

My first eReader - a B&N Nook Simple Touch - I used for a while, then went back to paper books. That was mostly because the cost of eBooks rose, and I started buying used paperbacks instead, to save money. A few years later I bought my Kindle eReader. I have only read one paper book (novel) since then, and that was because it wasn't available in eBook format. eReaders are so much more convenient and easy to use. But I must admit, I much prefer the look of a group of paper book novels on a shelf. That sight warms my heart like no eReader can. But the eReader is just so much more convenient in actual use. For technical books, with drawings and graphs and such, I still prefer paper.

Not bored exactly, but yes the novelty has worn off. That doesn't mean I don't keep using them though. The novelty of my refrigerator, my car, tech devices I own, and many other things that were once new has also worn off. But I still use anything that remains useful. TBH I still buy paper books too, but nearly all books I buy are ebooks because I like the advantages of ebooks.

Content is king for me. Not the doodad I read it on. I couldn't imagine going back to the days of waiting on physical books to arrive in the mail. Or having to drive to a store or a library to get them (not to mention going back to dealing with fixed font sizes). The ability to discover a book and start reading it (with a comfortable font size) within seconds from wherever I happen to be is absolutely priceless. I have mine so I can carry and read my complete library. I would only go back to the so called "real books" only under dire circumstances.

Perhaps "novelty" wasn't the most apt term to describe my experience with ebooks. Like others, the number of ebooks I've read since owning an ereader(s) increased dramatically to what I've read before. What got me back into purchasing books was mainly due to reading academic books which have extensive end notes, footnotes and references. Having a phyiscal book to be able to flip back and forth was a lot easier than using the links in the ebooks. Plus, I could purchase a used physical academic book a lot cheaper than the kindle version. Now, the novelty for me is reading the real physical book after all of these years.

I admit to buying more physical books in the past 3 years than in the 7 years before that because of availability, price, and/or complexity. But the time and money I spend on ebooks dwarfs that spent on physical books. And, most of the time, I would have preferred to buy the ebook version.
Since you have multiple devices, have you considered having the same book open at different places on 2 or more devices? |

I'm not bored with them (e-ink). I just don't use them. My iphone/ipad just work better for me.

Sometimes I do wish I could buy real books and read those. Then I think of the hundreds of ebooks on my e-reader and nope, but once in awhile is ok.

The books on my Kindle are real. I didn't buy my first Kindle because of the novelty. I bought it because I need the options it gives me...the ability to increase the font size was the bigggest issue. Once I read for a day or so, I never looked back.
I don't see digital books as unreal or pretend. The story is the same, and the various options make it a much nicer experience. |

The reading device was never the draw for me; the reading matter was. When I reached the stage many years ago of having overloaded double-stacked bookshelves against every available wall surface in my house it was a case of buying a bigger house or buying ebooks. The ebooks won out.

I get the novelty aspect, but eventually it just becomes a day-to-day activity. I never went back to paper books because I can't read them anyway (vision damage), but don't beat yourself up if you also read paper books. There is no need to be a 'purist' if you don't want to. I still miss my Pern series in hardcover, but I couldn't read them any more, so out they went. On the plus side, when I move into an apartment in the next 6 years or so, there will be a lot less for me to agonize getting rid of to fit the new space.

Not at all. Yes, the novelty has worn off, but I still vastly prefer ebooks over paper books. Nowadays I buy a paper book only if there's no ebook edition and I really, really want to read it. Or if it's a book with large color photos.
I only read for entertainment, not academic books. That said, I certainly read much less than 20-30 years ago, in the pre-internet days. Then there was little else to do with your free time. Now there are more ways to entertain yourself. I've never liked to watch television, but I do like streaming services, like Netflix and Amazon Prime. |
