Add new category to MyShelves, how?

I can't make it work. I want to add an additional category to My Shelves (my own category system) so I do this:
-Rightclick on My Shelves in left sidebar
-Choose User categories editor
-Choose Category Filter "My Shelves"
-Fill in new category name in top field right
-Press + sign to add

And then I can't think what else to do. Something bloody obvious, probably. Can somebody help?

Is My Shelves something to do with Goodreads or Kobo or whatever ?

Calibre's User Categories are a way of creating categories based on other categories - e.g. you could create one called Favourites - into which you add for example your favourite authors and favourite series.

Yes, My Shelves is simply the name I adopted for a user-made category-system. So I already have a system containing about 12 categories and I want to add another category.

Is Myshelves a Custom Column ? Of fixed value text?
Preferences: Add your own column: select: edit: add to the comma list

I'm not sure if I explained it OK.
This is what I have: a custom column, called My Shelves with a lookup name myshelves.
In this column field I can choose from a number of categories, which I put there myself (though I can't remember for the life of me how I've done that): Medieval, Literature, Miscellaneous etc.
Now I want to add a category to that list, e.g. Roman history. And that's where I'm stumped.
If only I could remember how I made those categories in the first place I would probably be able to figure it out. But that was a few years ago when I got a new PC and had to reinstall Calibre.

Yes.
Use the second line of my previous post. Be careful to NOT delete or change existing ones, but you can move them around.

I'm sorry, somehow I feel we're on different wavelenghts. When I do what you tell me I add a new custom column to Calibre. That's not what I'm looking for. I already have a custom column called My Shelves. In that column for each book I have a pulldown field from where I can choose one of the categories I have defined. I want to add a new category which doesn't exist yet to that pulldown list.
Or am I being extremely dim?

The title is confusing.
That is also how you revisit a configuration to do an edit ( the book and pen)

If My Shelves is Text with a fixed set of values, you add, change and delete values in the column definition - Preferences->Add your own columns

OK, I've made some progress. In Calibre I looked at the metadata of one book. In the Custom Metadata tab I changed the name of the My Shelves field to the new category name (so I typed it in as it was as yet an unexisting category). Lo and behold, the new name is added to the list in My Shelves in the right sidebar.
However, this new collection is not added to my Kobo when synced. I've looked at the Kobo plugin in Device Interface Plugin and Create Collections is ticked, so that should work, shouldn't it?

If everything is configured correctly, it should happen. https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kob...nd_Collections has the details. The most common problem is that the Metadata Management is not set to automatic.

If everything is configure correctly, then I need to see a debug log from calibre when connecting the device.

Yes, it works. I made the mistake of thinking that connecting the device to Calibre is enough syncing. When I manually add the book with the new metadata it creates a new collection on the Kobo with the book in it.
One thing I don't understand though: I have only one instance of the book in Calibre, with the new category set, but on the device the book is listed both in the old collection and the new one.

The collections are only managed for books on the device and also in the library. The collection is only created when a book is put on the device.

On Kobo devices, a book can be in as many collections as you want.
