Paperwhite new firmware - books appear and disappear right away
Hey guys,
I've been using Calibre and Paperwhite for ages, never had a problem. Until now. I decided to upgrade the firmware to 5.10.3 since they advertised faster and smoother page turning, and overall performance optimization. That works great and it actually runs a bit smoother. However, I can't send any new books to the device via Calibre. I send it via Calibre, disconnect the device, the books appear on Kindle as usual but disappear within seconds or after you open it and close, the book is not there. The books are still physically on the device. I tried copying the books manually to the device and this problem doesn't happen so it must be something between Paperwhite's latest firmware and Calibre. Any ideas? I've read the guidelines, I've read FAQ. I have the latest Calibre version. I have another Kindle with still the old firmware and everything works just fine so it must be something with the firmware and the Calibre. ![]() Kindle #01 - new firmware 5.10.3 - manually copying the book to the device works - sending the same book via Calibre to the device sends the book, the book shows up for a second and disappears - tried multiple different books, always the same - this started happening right after I updated the firmware Kindle #02 - haven't updated the firmware on this Kindle yet, still 5.9.2.0.1 - everything works fine - tried the exact same books and never a problem Last edited by thesn00ze; 03-08-2019 at 01:30 PM. |

Are you on latest version of calibre? If not, try updating.

works fine on my paperwhite with that firmware version. You are likely experiencing this issue https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq...id-not-show-up

I have the latest Calibre version. As I said, I went through FAQ and nothing like that is mentioned there.
It works fine on my other Kindle, it works fine if I manually copy books to the 1st Kindle. It simply doesn't work sending books there via Calibre since the firmware update. The book shows up and disappears right in front of my eyes within a few seconds. |

"Sometimes a particular book can cause the indexer to crash" the book works just fine on the other Kindle and worked just fine before the firmware. I've tried tons of books now.
I deleted them all and tried one by one, it happens with the very first book, it appears there and then disappears in like 20 sec. The problem isn't the book doesn't show up, it does but then it disappears. It simply is some issue with Calibre, getting new firmware issue. Guess I will have to do the factory setting I appreciate all the help, guess it's one of those bugs it's more time consuming to figure out/fix than to do the full reset. |

I want to thank kovidgoyal and everyone else for the great guidance on this forum. I started using Calibre a few weeks ago and was blown away by all it has to offer. Up until then I was loading books via drag 'n' drop on my Windows computer. Pffffffft! Calibre is the way to go!
My reason for posting today is due to problems I had with viewing my latest uploads -- much like those described in this thread. I "googled" around and found the Calibre FAQ; following kovidgoyal's advice, I did a complete reset and then reloaded my collection. Voila! It's all right as rain, as the old saying goes! I've turned my valuable ebook collection into an invaluable resource of everything I need to keep me entertained, thoughtful, educated and happy. And best of all, I'm in control. So far. ('n') I'm sure I'll mess it up again, but at least now I know where to go for counsel and wisdom. \(^o^)/ Thanks again, kovidgoyal for inventing this creative and useful tool. So many of us are in your debt, no doubt. Best wishes! Last edited by Redneck Zen; 04-05-2019 at 05:06 PM. Reason: Apparently I can't spell "google" :P |
