I got a new Kindle!

After many, many years I now have a new Kindle. I was gifted a Paperwhite 10th generation for my 19th wedding anniversary. It took me a little time to find even how to change the font and brightness. I am amazed how far the firmware has come since 2012.

First Impressions: Lighting is seriously improved compared to my PW1, Contrast is much improved. Which is very important to me. I love the bezel design. The flush screen is wonderful. Ability for custom fonts and adding weight to text is something I wanted for a very long time. The only thing that seems to not have change is the large font size jump from 4 to 5. I'm very pleased with my new reader so far.

I am coming from using a Kobo HD Glo which is smaller in design.

You should be able to use a font ramp, but it will only work on KF8 books, not on KFX or Mobi. Make sure to use 14 values in it. You need to search for it a little bit. Or if you cannot find it, I can post the one I use for my Oasis 2.

Those are the default values. Adjust to fit your needs.

If you jailbreak your PW4 and are willing to replace a single .jar file after each firmware update (alternatively never update you Kindle) you can get font size remapping for KFX books...

Thank you! I'm trying to figure this font ramp mod out. I'm excited there is a way to add better font sizes to my Paperwhite. I prefer something between default 4 or 5. I actually had to enlarge the actually font file on my old Paperwhite to get it just right. In those days we added font weight as well. When I switched to a Kobo Glo HD I no longer needed any modified fonts because all that is built in. So this font ramp will give me more size options I will actually use. That's wonderful!

@Blossom: also check out the themes - much faster to switch than having to go into settings. I made one for KF8 and one for KFX. The one for KFX is at 4 and the setting for KF8 is at 8 or 9 on my font ramp (something between normal 4 and 5). You are not the only one that prefers something between 4 and 5.

Thank you! That's a great idea! I haven't even explored themes yet. Figuring on the font ramp numbers isn't as easy as I thought it would be. I prefer between 8.40( size 3) 9.36( size 4) but 10.54 (size 5) is too big so finding a sweet spot has been difficult because the words become spaced farther apart.

I'm using Caecilia Condensed with Bold setting 3. I'm still fiddling with it. Spent last night on it, but still not quite happy with the results.

I've been using size 3 or 4 before font ramp depending on book CSS.

Congratulations. This was the model that tempted me to get it, not quite as small or crisp as the Voyage, but the increased storage, water-proof, and nice size were all tempting. I love it. I added my own font, of course, but also jail-breaked it so I could have my own "screen-savers" on it. It's the nicest Kindle, though the Voyage is still just a little bit better, as far as size and screen. (Unfortunately mine has pin holes, though). I had been wanting a waterproof 6" reader for so long, and Kobo never came through. So Amazon won my purchase!

I love the flush screen. No dust getting caught in the edges causing shadows on the light. What font do you use? I added Amasis but that's it. I really love mine. It was worth waiting seven years. I don't think I would have been happy with previous Kindle models.

I use Charis SIL, I think it is, which I got here on MR somewhere. Love it! It is my go-to ereader. My Voyage and Aura H20 just sit there, most of the time...
