Keep more versions of the same format

Hello, any possibility to keep more versions of the same book (under single library item) in same format? (and possibly name the versions accordingly).
I noticed that when I open the metadata dialogue for a book, and drag&drop additional version of the book on the upper right list, the former instance of the same format (if existed) is replaced by the new. I'd need somehow to keep them both (and distinguish them by menaingful name), so they appear in the conversion dialogue when I request conversion to another format.

Calibre only allows a single instance of a particular extension to be stored against any given book record. The only way to get multiple formats stored against a single book record would be to store them inside an archive format (e.g. 7zip) and attaching that to the book record.

That's not too convenient, doesn't exist an user extension that gives support for more formats?

a single Format of different versions is indistinguishable .

Change the title (of the current): book name (v1), that should stop dup detect overwrite
Calibre's sort ignores the stuff in the Paren

Not that I have ever heard off. The limit of one file of a given type linked to a particular book record is fundamental to the database schema that Calibre uses and thus not amenable to change.

The other solution is to create multiple book records with the same title so that each instance is linked to a different book record. However I do not think that is what you wanted?

If you have let's say two epubs of different editions of the same book (e.g. one illustrated, the other not), you could convert one to AZW3 and indicate within the metadata (e.g. in a custom long text column) that the AZW3 is the non-illustrated edition. But this approach unlikely to work satisfactorily if they are PDFs or some other 'difficult' to convert format.

If it's only a few books the .7Z archive method is probably the best, we suggest .7Z because calibre won't do anything with them, whereas it can process .RAR and .ZIP archives. If it's a lot of books you might want to consider keeping them in a 'supplementary' folder and putting a link in an Identifier value, or in a long text custom column.
