Modern eInk device that plays MP3’s?
I have a Kindle Keyboard, which is great for reading, listening to Audible, text-to-speech and music, and even playing interactive fiction games. But screen technology has improved so much. Is there anything newer that will also play music files?

Yes there is a number of them. I can't think of any with a built-in headphone jack though. You either need Bluetooth or can also use a USB adapter. The new Kindles can do Audible but not MP3s, and not in some countries either (U.S only?). Some Pocketbooks can do audio but I don't think they can do Audible (because Amazon!). There is also the Android eReaders that can do it like Boox line and the Boyue Likebooks. They can just run Android apps so they can do whatever. Some even have a built in speaker.

Thanks. Reading the wiki here, it looks like the BOOX C76XL is just what I need (has hardware buttons and a light), but absolutely nothing comes up in Google. Was it sold under a different trade name? All of the other models have catchy names…

That's an old device, they don't sell it anymore. It also only has Android 4.0 which is quite old at this point and doesn't work with a lot of apps anymore.

I don’t mind older. But it’s like it was wiped from the earth. Should the lack of used ones on eBay make me think they’re not too reliable either?

I don't know what size screen you're looking for, but the 6" PocketBook Touch HD3 covers everything but Audible files. It comes with a USB to headphone adapter for listening to (non-Audible) audio books and music (MP3s and M4b — whatever M4b is). It also has the TTS feature with multiple downloadable voices to read standard books to you. It can do this through Bluetooth, though I don't think I've ever tried the Bluetooth feature. From what I can see, Bluetooth seems to be a battery hog. I like the PocketBook but it sounds like you may want an Android reader that will let you install Kindle's eReader app. Edit: If you a want a six inch reader the Boox Poke 3 looks like it would check all the boxes. No USB to headphone adapter (don't know if one could be bought) but it does support Bluetooth for MP3s. Last edited by rcentros; 07-03-2021 at 12:00 AM. |

Yeah, I don't think they are super high volume sellers in North America to pop up on eBay frequently.
The Poke 3 and the current Boox range like the Nova 3, Note Air, etc. support both analog and digital USB C to 3.5mm adapters so any should work fine. |

Hisense make a specialist e-ink music player:
https://goodereader.com/blog/electro...-e-ink-display But it's a very niche device and if you want something more mainstream I would go for a Boox. |
