how much snappier/faster is Forma vs 1st-gen Aura H2O?
How much snappier is the forma vs aura h2o gen1? I ask because I have some hands-on time with a gen1 aura h2o, and it feels a bit slow during page turns.
March 14 2019 Update: I ask because I'm interested in buying a Forma, but I'm currently at a place where they have the 1st generation Aura H20 but no Forma. ![]() Last edited by droopy; 03-14-2019 at 09:27 AM. |

I don't find page turns slow on my gen1 Aura HD H2O. The only slow aspect is text selection prior to search/highlight/note.
It IS slower for a while when you copy a load of books via USB. Likely because it's importing metadata to a database and indexing? I have refresh on every page turn on as then any accidental page change is obvious and text quality on average is a little better. Read all the recent threads about the Forma. Personally I'd not make page turn relative speed a selection criterion. A newer model is unlikely to be slower! |

I don't understand why you'd state that. Isn't that obvious? Tech always gets faster.

I don't have a Forma. So I can only compare to a Kindle PW4.
They're both a bit slow. All eInk devices I had so far were like that. (You get used to it, so it's fine.) Part of that is due to the display technology, which just doesn't do instant screen refreshes... Part of it is the firmware. So you can try your luck with alternative reading software like KOReader too. There might be a minor improvement with that, I don't know. If you need it even snappier then you have to look to devices with LCD/LED screen. I have an ancient Smartphone (samsung galaxy i9000 with AMOLED), it's unusable nowadays since only 512MB RAM, but you can read books with it and it even looks great (nightmode, black background, gray text since pure white is too bright). And it's definitely snappy, instant pageflips. I hope my H2O will last for a long time, it's my favorite reader and depending on availability in Germany (or lack thereof), I might not get another Kobo in the future... |

Kobo firmware doesn't do indexing like the Kindles. The import of sideloaded is done in one go and you cannot do anything else at the same time. If it is slower when paging through the library looking at new books, it will be because it is generating cover images.

Regarding H20, watch out what kind of SD card you put your books on if you use SD. It can be way slower than the internal storage.
It's fast enough for me, but indeed when I want to see a word definition sometimes it's tricky. Most of the time it registers my touch as a page turn. It happens if the device already detected inactivity/turn low power. There's a small time window since the last touch when the device is snappy, than it obviously goes to low power. |

Thank you all for your replies. I'd like to state that I asked what I asked in my original post because I'm interested in buying a Forma, but I'm currently at a place where they have the 1st generation Aura H20 but no Forma.

Honestly, in day-to-day usage, I don't think you would notice a difference in speed.
