Square box instead of apostrophe in entire book

Dear all,

I have a very similar problem to this:

I have a EPUB File, which I can transfer without any problems to my Kindle Paperwhite.

But throughout the book, all the apostrophes are replaced by this square icon-thingy.

I get that the apostrophy in the book is apparently something that the kindle cannot read/regonize:

But what is the solution to this for me? I would suspect it to be quite simply?

I get, that I can somehow maybe edit and replace all the apostrophies with another, readable one.. but this is an entire book (!!) we are stalking about.

I tried to convert it to MOBI, I tried some things that I could think of, but I am so out of options at this point.

I really hope someone can help!

It is a character encoding issue. Calibre (or a plug-in) might well be able to fix it but I would post on calibre forum here to find out.

The square box indicates that the character is not present in the font. I'd suggest reporting the issue to the bookstore where you bought the book.

If the options offered don't work for you, the way I'd fix this is:

- rename the epub file with a zip extension and unzip the file into a folder
- open one of the HTML. Look for a word with apostrophe and see how the apostrophe is encoded. Probably looks like &#xxxx where xxxx are digits.
- now you need an editor or find replace tool to replace what you found in step above with ' in all the HTML files.
- zip the folder back up and rename zip file to epub.
