Error Communicating with Device

I am getting the Error communicating with device message. The detail info -

This problem started after upgrading sometime after 12/18/2018. I am using a Kindle 5th Gen connecting to a Win10 PC running 64 bit Calibre. I have reset the Kindle multiple times, rebooted the PC, changed cables & USB ports, renamed the metadata.calibre files all to no available. Outside of Calibre, I am able to read & write to the device without any errors. I know that I can connect via the content server but I would prefer to connect via USB into Calibre.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Update: I removed Calibre 38.1, rebooted and installed 64-bit 35.0 and the same error communicating occurs. Double checked that Win10 had all updates installed. Deleted Calibre metadata and drive info files from device internal & storage directories. No change in problem.

That is an error communicating with the device. Usually, this kind of error can be fixed by
following the steps below in sequence. First:

1) Try rebooting both the device and your computer
2) If that does not work, find the files driveinfo.calibre and metadata.calibre on the device
and delete them (you can use Windows Explorer or a file manager on the device itself to do this)
3) Reset the device

If none of those work, you can use one of the wireless communication methods described here:
