Sideloading

When I sideload books, I just drag and drop epub's or pdf's directly into the main directory - never use Calibre, never use adobe additions for sideloading. My sideloading way works fine but is that the way it's supposed to be done? or is it supposed to be dropped into another folder?

Out of curiosity, why don't you use Calibre? You obviously don't have to as your sideloading is working fine without. I'm just wondering. I like Calibre because it snags/cleans metadata and can find a better cover.

I also simply drag and drop books to my Kobo. I use Calibre for converting books but I'm not interested in a software library manager so I don't usually have my books in Calibre. I convert them, make a copy and remove them from Calibre.

Your way if fine, gets the job done and puts your books on the device so you can read them.

For myself I prefer to use Calibre so I can have my books genre tags the way I want them and series info the way I want it, change/ad covers if need be. That and I prefer to send to the device as kePub instead of ePub.

I can sideload epubs and pdfs from my computer desktop to my Kobo and it works fine. But if I sideload a kepub (which I prefer), the file doesn't show up in my Kobo. So I started to use Calibre to "Send Book to Device".

I have so many ebooks, only a handful fit on my Kobo (2 MB Glo) anyway, so I use Calibre to keep track of ones I have read and ones I want to read soon.

I have Calibre but I only use it to put covers on epubs that are missing covers. I don't use it exclusively. Maybe on the odd occasion that I want to convert a pdf to epub but that's about it.
I know Calibre can be used for sorting books into libraries and etc.. but haven't explored those options yet and mainly just want to get books onto the kobo to read.

I don't do a crazy amount of sorting books into collections myself. Mostly I sideload using Calibre because I like that it will convert my ePubs to kepubs on the Kobo without me having to store a file of that format on my PC. Also, adding series info is nice for the occasional time I'm reading books in a series.

Your dragging and dropping seems to work for you. I'm not sure if there's a particular folder your sideloaded books 'should' go in, but if it's working for you as is, don't fix it.

The Kobo firmware doesn't care as long as you don't use a directory with a filename starting with a '.' which makes it a hidden directory. Personally, I prefer to copy the ebooks into a subdirectory. Just makes things easier to organize. It also keeps me from exceeding the number of entries in the root directory (65534 with the additional proviso that long file names use more than one entry).
