best practices/format for free ebooks
I was under the impression that mobi was a better file format than epub but I find that epub seems to be more flexible in that I can edit the book, more specifically, change its title, for example, adding "(Peter Wimsey #3)" to the book title and having it show up with that on my kindle.
I was wondering what other people prefer, and why, for free ebooks on the kindle. |

You can change the title metadata on both Mobi and ePub.
As to better file formats. Mobi is a very old format that doesn't quite have the flexibility of ePub or the Kindle's more modern AZW3/KF8 format. Any of them will work just fine, especially for a typical novel type book, but ePub & AZW3 include more styling possibilities and also the ability to do things like embed fonts. |

I believe calibre LIKES epub. Not sure but I think that when converting or displaying a book calibre always first convert to epub. Then displays/converts the result.

My current strategy when downloading books from public domain/free sites is to download epub whenever that's available and then when sending the book to the kindle have calibre convert it to azw3. With azw3 the kindle displays the book as I've specified in the theme I made which is ragged right and the custom font cambria (which looks very similar to bookerly except it's about a point smaller and looks crisper on my computer monitor). So now that I have a clear path I have a lot of work re-downloading a bunch of books that I didn't download in epub format (either mobi or the old azw). |
