Not really. If you don't turn it on, then it should be no different from before. The option is to update the metadata for a book in the database whenever the device is connected and there has been some change in the calibre library. The previous versions were doing this for the series info, it is now doing if for the rest of the visible metadata. There is a thread in the Kobo forum discussing it in more detail.
