Troubleshooting Papwerwhite 6th gen doesnt work

Hi there

I have here a Paperwhite DP75sdi (6th gen Paperwhite 2013) which is impossible to turn on.

When connected to my debian-system it says:

The buzz-word seems to be idProduct=dead, which indicates a broken battery. So I opened the device to get the battery.
The battery however haves 2.8V.

I am mechanical engineer, but no electronics specialist.
Does it mean the battery is ok and something else is broken? Or do I have to replace the battery?

If the fully charged voltage is 2.8V it is nearly dead.

Definitely. The battery voltage (when fully charged) should be 3.7v. Fortunately if you’ve disassembled the PW to get at the battery, replacing the battery is easy.

So, the battery is here and build in.
After charging its the same situation. The device doesn't turn on.

Ok, now i have an spare battery

but I would prefer an working device.

Any hints?

Who put the battery in? If you did it, perhaps check that you've done it correctly.

It would be pretty hard to screw up the battery installation on one of these. (See attachment.)

I'm just throwing out suggestions. The only battery I ever changed was in the Sony prs 505, and a techie friend did it for me. It was successful, but the second battery never did hold the charge for as long as the first.

I understand. I wish I knew more about fixing these, but I'm afraid it looks like an issue with the system board or memory. Someone on the Kindle Development forum might be able to give a better diagnosis.

Was the new battery reading over 3V? I'd not expect a new one to give a fully charged voltage as they are usually stored at about 2/3rds capacity, about 3.4V.

You can manually charge unplugged using a current source, or a resistor to limit current from 5V to about 100mA. You need to monitor temperature and terminal voltage. Stop if more than 40 C or 3.6V.
This will tell if the problem is the charging circuit has failed on the Kindle and if either battery is OK.
A dead battery will heat without charging. Eventually it would go on fire, which is why power circuits on anything with a lithium battery are usually designed to switch off/disconnect if battery is too low and not attempt to charge if the battery seems to be at the end of life.
