How do I correct this error?

Check line 178 of your content.opf file.

A typical guide entry will look something like this:

  <guide>
    <reference type="cover" title="Cover" href="Text/cover.xhtml"/>
  </guide>

The error message indicates the "reference" element is missing.

The guide section (if present) must contain at least one reference item. I don't know enough about the epub in question to suggest the best course of action.
