I have always had a kindle and usually read the free books.

Is this an option for a Kobo device, free books?

Yes, I've purchased several book from Google for reading on a Kobo ereader. Basically, purchase the book, download into ADE, import into calibre to strip DRM and allowing cleaning up metadata and cover, sideload to my Kobo.

You can also get the books from Amazon. In my experience, many of the freebies are drm free, so you can just convert them. But the tools to strip the drm are available, as long as you understand that it's technically against the dmca...

This might be a stupid question, but how do you get the files from Amazon? When I still had a kindle & switched to Kobo i downloaded them all onto the kindle & transfer them from there.

Now that I no longer have a Kindle I've found no way to download any books from Amazon outside of their ecosystem (Kindle App/ Kindle devices)

Kindle App and then use calibre to import and convert. If the books have DRM the you will also need tools from Apprentice Alf.
