Authorize PRS505 in Digital Editions

Hello:

I have a PRS505 and have a few books that were purchased in Adobe DE format (yes they have DRM). I am using a 64 bit version of Vista.

Digital Editions is not asking me to authorized my reader. So, I cannot transfer my books.

I have contacted Adobe, who recommended that I delete DE (even items in subdirectories) and reinstall - which I did.

Upon reinstallation I was required to authorize my computer, which I did.

However, DE still did not ask me to authorize the reader.

I contacted Adobe again with this feed back and received a very polite but less than helpful recommendation that I contact Sony. I guess that is "Adobe Speak" for "Gee, I don't know what to tell you!"

I am reluctant to waste my time contacting Sony because the issue is really within the Adobe software.

Does anyone have any advise or experience with this issue?

This certainly isn't the end of the world for me. But, like having a small stone in your shoe, it is bothering me and I would like to correct the problem.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure the Sony driver is 32-Bit only. Sorry. Can you create a 32-bit VM?

Yes, the Sony drivers for DE are 32-bit only. (doh!) No idea when Sony will release 64-bit drivers (if ever).

My only luck was that I had an XP (32-bit) machine that I could install DE/Sony Drivers and authorize with. My 64-bit machine is authorized with DE also, so it might (really big if, haven't tried it!) be possible now to copy the files from my 64-bit machine to the reader's SD cards, but I don't know if that will really work. Until I get gutsy, I'll just use XP.

Creating a 32-bit VM should be pretty easy - either get Microsoft Virtual PC or VMWare (both free) and install Windows in there (assuming you have XP or a 32-bit edition). With luck you'll be able to patch the USB ports on your computer to the VM so that it can recognize the Reader.

Alternatively (but not a long-term solution), you can download "trial" VMs straight from Microsoft (used for testing websites in new browsers). These are time-bombed, though, and won't last forever (like 30 or 60 days, I think).

It's really annoying there's no default support for x64. Just getting Sony's eBookstore to work right was a pain in the rear. Which is sad, because x64 Vista really feels like a totally different OS from x32 Vista (which I couldn't stand...!). I know it shouldn't make /that/ much of a difference, but it feels like it to me.

Hope that helps - if you need the links to the trial VMs, let me know - I'll be happy to send them to you :-)

you are going to have to use VMWare. VPC does NOT virtualize USB ports.

Also, the Free VMWare does not allow for creating a VM... just running them. So you can go here which has free tools to create the VM Ware hard drive files and machines.

Hi,

I don't use DE to transfer books to my reader I use Windows Explorer to drag them to my reader via the Sony Library software. I'd guess that if you can see it in the Sony software you can drag it from Windows Explorer - might be worth a try... when you get gutsy

Cheers,
Terry.

You need to authorize you Reader with DE only once - afterwards you can use eBook Library or simple file copy to transfer the downloaded books. So just use a work or friend's PC for that.

Will the instructions in this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26849 not work for you? They're for installing the PRS-505 on Vista 64 and enabling Digital Editions.
