Android Apps for Boox Note
Hi mobileread forum,
Longtime lurker here. I just pulled the trigger on an Onyx Boox Note. My intended purpose is to use it as an all-in-one replacement for distraction free reading and writing at cafes and the library. In some ways, I like how surfing the web is black and white and kind've clunky. I am actually a first time Android user, so this isn't even just my first Android e-reader, but my first Android device ever! There are four apps I'd like to try in my workflow and I'm curious if any of you all have tried them: (1) Evernote, for the majority of my writing and some of my reading from the internet. I know that people have talked about how using the stylus has latency issues with this app and that the native Note apps is much better. I don't plan on using the stylus much, but simply organizing / copy + pasting / typing in this app. Does it work well? Does it sync well? (2) Google docs, for writing if Evernote doesn't work well. I trust that this app will work a bit better, but does it? I can find literally zero on the internet of people using Google docs on their Boox Notes or Max2s. (3) Pocket, for casual reading. (4) The New Yorker app, for reading the New Yorker-specific content. Has anyone used this app on their Boox e-readers? I haven't figured it out completely, but I would like to centralize all the reading I do online. My workflow is as follows: for saving casual news articles, I'll save to Pocket. For longer reads or academic reads (that I know I'll need to annotate or mark up, I'll save to Evernote). Evernote is a good contender for doing this, particularly because there are services out there that sync your Kindle highlights too, so I could possibly have everything in this app. Hence, the crucial question that will dictate whether or not I return my Boox Note is whether or not Evernote syncs well. Have any of you all used any other workflows for doing non-reading work on your Boox Note? Thanks! |

Before pulling the trigger, consider this:

I want to have my APK files stored in my own files collection to grant post-doomsday availability (etc.), and I do not see the need to use google servers as a proxy to download them: you can download the same APK files from other public sources. Note: this excludes paid-for apps, which to me is not a problem but it could for other users. Last edited by mdp; 07-07-2018 at 04:59 PM. |

I think the article explains that existing connections aren't terminated. However, you cannot connect new devices to the Play Store anymore if they don't meet the requirements (and the Boox line of ereaders doesn't).
That means that you're restricted to sideloading which is inconvenient (you don't get updates automatically) and can prevent you from using certain paid-for apps. |

He still says that to access store you are going to need android 8, no fucking way. He probably have a max 2, applied the ota but didn't activate the store in options and then didn't update the play services, google refused the connection without the services and he made a post talking something he doesn't know how it works. there is no ban on ereaders to the play store nor uncertified devices, nor sub android 8 either. |

Wow ok, so google play does or doesn’t work? I’m getting mixed signals.
Also, if it does but in a more inconvenient way, can someone point me in the direction of step by step directions as to how to get those apps in the Note? Thanks! |

I have never had a problem with Google Play, with or without activating it in settings. Play Store still works on my "old" C67 ML Carta with Android 4.2.2!
GoodeReader is not the most credible source of info. |

-- get the .apk file from, for example, an online source like apkpure; -- on the tablet, a setting that allows installing from all sources must be set; -- just place the file in the tablet's filesystem (e.g. dowload it there) and "execute" it (tap on it). I do not actually operate literally this way, but the above should work. |

Hm ok. So for some, it works as usual? No APK necessary.
For others, the workaround is necessary? |

>for some
I have skimmed again through this thread: is there anyone here or elsewhere who reported they could not, up to these hours, connect to play? >workaround Actually, "storing the program file" is the traditional method. Once the Internet has done its job, distribution, you refer to the distributed material. |
