Howdy!
Hi there. My friendly UPS man will be delivering a Kindle tomorrow, my first eReader. I'm not sure if the Kindle is going to be my ultimate reader of choice, but it seems like as good a start as any.
I've wanted an eReader for some time but just didn't think that I could grow to love a 6-inch screen. The iRex DR1000 seems more to my taste, but it looks like it's got a few growing pains to get through first. So I'll give the Kindle a try. After the usual stuff, I suspect my main questions will be on DRM for mobi books. Assuming that I may get another eReader later on, can I buy Kindle ebooks from Amazon and get them on to my other reader? Or should I buy regular mobi ebooks, say from Mobipocket.com, and get them onto my Kindle? Glad I found this forum, as it looks like the answers are all here. |

Hi davey and welcome!
![]() I've had my Kindle now for about a month. I don't know how I ever got along without it!! I really do love it. I was a little worried about both the "next page" button and the cover, having read so many negative things about them. I've been pleasantly surprised to find out that both are non-issues for me. I keep the Kindle in the cover while reading--as recommended--and that seems to solve 1/2 of the button problem. The other 1/2, I learned pretty quick. Put the thing to sleep BEFORE you do anything else like turn off the power. As for the cover--I've had it fall out once while reading in bed and turned the Kindle too far horizontally. Someone else here recommended "gluing" the Kindle into the cover with 3M Command (I think that's right) as opposed to velcro. I really haven't found the need to do even that. Anyway, have fun here at MR! Regards, R.L. |

Yeah ... that Command strip idea was mine. I have since moved on to magnets.
Welcome, and I hope you love your Kindle as much as I do mine. If you even think you might want to move on to another device ... then I would definitely just purchase non DRM'd mobi format for the time being. Or, you could learn how to strip off the DRM from the books from Amazon, and then keep them in mobi format. Keep in mind, however, that some of the Amazon books are in Topaz format, and as far as I know there is no way to remove the DRM from those. Also, I'm not positive it's possible to determine in advance if a book from Amazon is regular *.azw format (which is mobi) or Topaz format. |
