HP 2730p Elitebook Tablet PC

http://www.gottabemobile.com/GBM%20R...blet%20PC.aspx

Ok, here's a new Tablet PC on the block that looks pretty sleek. It is a convertible but in Tablet mode you couldn't tell. They claim much better battery life. I wonder if people would consider this over a DR1000WS.

Some brief quotes from the review linked to above:

Quote:
You’ve got WiFi, (a/b/g/draft-N) with choices between Intel or Broadcom radios and you’ve got integrated BlueTooth. You will also be able to choose (I don’t think this is available yet) HP’s Mobile Broadband option which is powered by GOBI, the new technology that allows travelers to switch between multiple carriers.
Sweet!

Quote:
You’ve got 2 USB ports, an Express card slot, and SD card slot, audio in and out, VGA, LAN, and modem connections, and a Firewire port.
Quote:
In fact, depending on your configuration, HP is claiming that the Elitebook 6930 will give you 24 hours of juice. You won’t see 24 hours with the 2730p but you will see a significant improvement. With the right configuration HP is touting up to 15 hours of battery life. That right configuration includes the Ultra-slim battery slice, which is the same accessory that worked with the HP 2710p.
Sounds cool. No word of price on this sucker though. But, I WANT ONE!!! If would make a great type of active "document reader". Plus, since it runs a full blown copy of Vista all DRM schemes would be supported (except Kindle of course.)

For me, the downsides of tablet PCs for reading which have kept me from buying one are battery life, weight, temperature, and cost. (I don't care about eink vs. other displays; I can live with them.) The battery life on this one sounds great (I have no problems with recharging daily). But the weight is still pretty high (3.7 lbs before added "battery slice") and the operating temperature, I'm guessing, is still going to be quite warm. So if the cost is over $1500, I think I'm still going to have to wait. But I'm certainly drooling!!

Agreed. This one uses an "LV" (low voltage) chip... which are supposed to run alot cooler than your standard laptop/desktop CPU. We'll have to wait until someone here gives us some hands on. Not sure when it will be out either.

Another thing which will help the temperature on a Tablet PC is to install a CF-IDE adapter and use a CF card instead of a HD (or purchase a solid state HD). I did that on my Stylistic 2300 and it was a huge improvement and it's my next project on my 4110.

The price is probably going to be $2000+ if you keep it in line with prices of its previous generation, the 2710p and its main competitor's the Lenovo X200t and Dell XT.

The thing is that if you don't need the performance of the new model, you can get some really good deals on the 2710p as retailers and HP are slowly clearing out stock.

A closer comparison in price would be HP's TX series of tablets. While heavier, you can easily get them for around the same price of the Digital reader, i.e. $600-900 depending on the configuration.

But, that may be ok. Because you are not buying "just" an ebook reader here, but a full featured PC. But, if it is $2000 or so it will certainly be out of my price range. I already have a Dell laptop that I barley use now that I have my iMac, I doubt the "boss" would go for me getting this if it is $2000.

I really wish Apple would get into this space (tablet). Imagine the Air without a physical keyboard and a iPhone like touch screen. Yes, it wouldn't be cheap... but it would be sweet.

That it is, I agree, but just wanted to mention that you do have to pay a significant price premium for it. But then again, you have that premium for any of the lightweight Tablets.

I've been looking at replacing my laptop, and while i like the looks of them, the prices have been too high for me to justify. That why I've been watching Hp TX series with interest, as while they are not the lightest, you do get Tablet functionality and a reasonably powerful machine for a decent price.

IF you can put up with a 3-4hr battery life and a little heft, check out the TX2010 or the TX2550. There are some deals for it that you can get it for about $800-900 with rebates for a well loaded machine.

Got a hp tx2250. Would be the prefect reader for me except as already mentioned; the battery and weight. less than 3 hours in low power mode.
