Guys, best male characters?

Guys, I'm looking for comments only from guys. If you're a Man, I would like you to comment on this question:

What Male character out there kicks (or kicked) butt?

I know that some Male characters are written to be just elderly Men with flabby tits, but elderly Men can be great characters. So - what Male character - either young or old and from a book - has impressed you with His masculinity?

If you're a female and you respond to this, then your secret is out.

I've always thought John Irving's male characters were pretty honest, though his female characters come across almost alien at times (I found the exact opposite to be true of Margaret Atwood, though I've read fewer of her later novels, purely through an absence of time).

Yeah, I like his male characters, too, although some have accused the author of being misogynistic. I suspect those opinions are fostered mainly by disgruntled female critics or frustrated female writers who don't like the way the author "treats" his female characters.

If his characters remain "in type" and true to Irving's vision, whether they are misogynistic or not does not mean the author necessarily shares those same beliefs.

Yes. And I hope that's what others took it to mean when I said "honest". Perhaps "believable" would have been a better choice.

It's true too, it's always a risk to accuse an author of their characters' attributes (I mean, no-one seriously thinks Dan Brown himself is a depthless, poorly-drawn, vacuous cardboard-cutout, do they? ), though I admit that being in the same group as the subject of some fictional prejudice "honestly" presented in a novel's protagonist can be a somewhat disturbing, and separation can be difficult.
