Shops shows release date 1000SW

Hi,

The Dutch bookstore Selexyz shows a release date of late 2008 for the 1000SW. I haven't contacted them to confirm it.

The text literally says "the models 1000 and 1000SW will become available as of late 2008".

source: selexyz.nl

If it has been mentioned before, I apologize.

If not, I obviously cannot guarantee that it is not some unfortunate mistake.

*edit: the title says 'shops', where it should've been shop.

Not sure that is big news. I believe we always expected the SW to appear before the New Year. I'll get excited when the date becomes known. I hope late in the year means Nov rather than Dec. Even Oct can qualify as late in the year but that is probably wishful thinking.

What I find interesting is mentioning the 1000 and SW together. iRex hasn't put up a detailed page for the SW. It did for the other two versions. Why is iRex holding back the SW product page when the 1000 is present even though it also has not been released?

You should remember that they got the info from Irex. "late 2008" might refer to 20 August 2009.

Personally I don't see the reason for a delay. I'd guess that the only difference is that the PCB is a bit more populated. I'd expect the software to be identical -- and assuming a common chip for the WiFi/Bluetooth support and they are still using Linux there should be very little software for it, and I'd expect it to already have been finished. Or am I hopeless naive?

It'll be good to see a firm date. (And I'd like to see what they plan on using the Bluetooth for....)

Anything that has a receiver/transmitter on it requires special certification and testing. This is likely the reason for the delay.

Good point. How complex and lengthy is that process likely to be?

That said I'd have expected most of that to be done much the same time they were going through the EMC and other testing and before going into production.

The process is out of their control which is why they can't commit to a date I would expect. There is often a queue to even get started. The SW will have to be fully tested all over again due to the different hardware.

I am not an expert on testing but iRex can't be starting from scratch. All three lines should have been submitted at the same time. The shielding is probably the same for all three. Only the third unit should require FCC approval and the European equivalent because of Bluetooth and Wifi. They should have had plenty of time to get the testing phase completed for a common launch. I think it is either a production line issue or just marketing. There is a marketing technique for how products are introduced. By the way if there were issues with the SW because of Wifi then why isn't the low end reader not yet available? Or they are just playing with our heads. No matter what the reason it is interesting how iRex allows us, including me, to make excuses for them.

We should start hearing about the launch date soon if it is arriving before the end of the year.

With the 1000S just now filling the pipeline, and PlasticLogic starting to get industry excitement cranked up, perhaps the folks at iRex kick it in gear...
