Hopeful for some well explained, simple jailbreak assistance please :)
Good morning. Gosh, I've just noticed I've not been here for SEVEN YEARS - wow, anyway, it's nice to be back again.
Okay, so I have a question, and I hope you can answer it concisely for me, as I am extremely Linux/bash proficient, but I am VERY rusty on the Kindle hacking front: #1: I have a Kindle PaperWhite 3, Black, UK, 3GB, G090-G1- blah... it came with 5.8.11 #2: After making the mistake of connecting my first Kindle PW3 to WiFi and it updating, I have learnt, got a new one, copied "update.bin.tmp.partial" empty DIR to root of storage, and also "update_PW3_5.7.4_initial.bin" - it has now downgraded to 5.7.4 - confirmed. #3: I quit the setup process, didn't connect to WiFi, and would be most grateful if you would show me how I: ~ Jailbreak the device - what files do I need (I am autistic, please do not send me off on multiple URLs - my mind gets very confused easily - thanks) ~ Safely update the device WITHOUT losing jailbreak, after the jailbreak has completed. I do not want to come across as fussy or demanding, but I often have concentration span issues due to the above mentioned - I know my way around Linux as I have for 15 years, but I just DO NOT want to battle with Amazon's appalling "customer service" another time, seeking another replacement (it took me 14 hours to get ONE replacement, non stop chat!) Thank you ![]() |

Well, you really only need one link:
https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/5_x...#Step-by-Step: You can skip ahead to step 5. |

![]() [EDIT]: Okay, so so many "If you came here from X, do Y..." type comments on the wiki article - my mind's in a total spin - I know it's hard work put into these tutorials, but they seem to be fragmented with inbound/outbound articles, URLs etc all over the place... maybe I'll parse it better when I've had some sleep to recover from the last 48hrs saga with Amazon's APPALLING "customer support" (12-14 hours on their chat & CS calls, throughout one day, for one SIMPLE Kindle issue!) I'll be back, and thanks, again for the help ![]() Last edited by glossywhite; 07-03-2018 at 11:17 PM. |

Hello glossywhite,
Based on what you have, here are the specific instructions for a pperwhite 3, copied from the wiki but trimmed down for paperwhite 3 G090G1 only. you will start from here on step 5, because you have already installed 1. Buy a kindle paperwhite 3 whoat serial number starts with G090G1 2. Startup the kindle, connect your wifi and register and then immediately go into airplane mode. - you must complete this before kindle can download an update 2.a There are more complicated ways to do this, @glossywhite, if you explained the steps you went through to downgrade to 5.7.4 that woudl be appreciated 3. Download update_PW3_5.7.4_initial.bin from somewhere - the MD5 shoudl be 14f2267189b9ecc51d89e4e86f201e75 3.a or use "update_pw3_factory_5.8.9.0.1.bin" this is a newer better one, but not available on google as much, you need to ask for it. 4. put update_PW3_5.7.4_initial.bin on your kindle. 4.a Connect Kindle to PC with the USB cable. 4.b Place the downloaded file (a .bin file) in the topmost, visible level of USB storage (alongside of /documents). 4.c Eject and/or Safely Remove (term depends on OS) the Kindle, USB storage. 4.d Remove the USB cable. 4.e go to Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Update Your Kindle 4.f wait 10 or more minutes on the install - it is probably working, dont worry about it being broken unless it is rebooting for an hour. 5. Download the Jailbreak and install it- as of today it is here at this link 5.a Connect Kindle to PC with the USB cable. 5.b Place the downloaded file (a .tar.gz archive - as is) in the topmost, visible level of USB storage (alongside of /documents). 5.c Eject and/or Safely Remove (term depends on OS) the Kindle, USB storage. 5.d Remove the USB cable. 5.e from the home page of the kinde, click the search bar 5.f type in Code:
;installHtml 5.f.1 - yes, the semi-colon and the capital H are important 6. Download the hotfix - this keeps the jailbreak active when you update the software - as of today, it is at this link 6.a Connect Kindle to PC with the USB cable. 6.b Place the downloaded file (a .bin file) in the topmost, visible level of USB storage (alongside of /documents). 6.c Eject and/or Safely Remove (term depends on OS) the Kindle, USB storage. 6.d Remove the USB cable. 6.e go to Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Update Your Kindle 6.f This one should finish in 30 -60 seconds You are done jailbreaking your device, and you can install any of amazon's normal updates now. NEVER hit the "reset" your kindle button from this point on, or you will lose the jailbreak. |

@coplate
Thank you for your Kind(le) assistance. I did mention hoe I downgraded, except for the fact that I didn't say I'd tapped "update" but presumed that's obvious. |

From your post, it looked like you skipped the wifi setup on 5.7.4, not on the version that came with your device. I believe that you need ro register the 5.7.4 before you install the jailbreak and hotfix. So make sure that you do that. Before you start #5, make sure you have done this: A. Create update.bin.tmp.partial on kindle B. Register your kindle C. Make sure update.bin.tmp.partial is still there - or put it into airplane mode quickly. This is because registering and de-registering the kindle clears certain data, the same as hitting the reset button. I can't remember the specific details, but it is best practice to have the kindle registered before you install the jailbreak and hotfix. Last edited by coplate; 07-04-2018 at 11:37 AM. |

#1: Opened the PW3 from new, sealed; It was on 5.8.11 from new. #2: Never connected WiFi, chose "Setup later" and skipped those steps (but it MAY be registered to me, as it's an Amazon replacement via my account.) #3: Immediately copied "update.bin.tmp.partial" dir & 5.7.4 firmware, to root of storage. #4: Tapped "Update" option, and it downgraded me to 5.7.4 I've done nothing else yet. |

How do I go about installing custom screensavers, now I am JB'n? Thanks
![]() _[EDIT]_ Okay, so I read a little and worked out that you NEED to upgrade from the "initial" (factory) 5.7.4 firmware to the "user" firmware (I updated mine to only 5.7.4.1) and THEN it sees the KUAL "KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2" which I put in /documents ... so now, how does one go about installing custom screensavers, on of the ONLY reasons I did all this? What do I do here, please, to get my custom screensavers... Is this it? https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=195474 ![]() Last edited by glossywhite; 07-05-2018 at 10:37 PM. |
