Local database and eBooks on NAS?
Hi there,
I started to manage my eBooks with Calibre, which is almost working great ![]() Before I'd my database direct on my NAS, but after using Windows 10 I'm getting more and more access errors to it. So I'm planning to work like this: I want to use Calibre portal (background is to sync with my Laptop, but they are not used the same time) and leave the database local. But the eBooks has to be saved in a specific directory on my NAS. Is this possible? Or are the eBooks always saved in the database directory? Thanks for your help ![]() |

It seems you need to set the CALIBRE_OVERRIDE_DATABASE_PATH env var to point at your local copy of metadata.db.

But then the database-file + ebooks are on my NAS?
![]() This makes no access errors? My suggestion was to leave the database-file local and only the eBooks on my NAS |

If you put the books on the NAS then you run the risk of corruption. There are *many* threads about this, where people find that library check finds lots of errors because books are not in the proper directories. The reason: the network file protocols don't reliably support calibre's "atomic rename" methods. The result: books appear to have been lost. And yes, lots of people say "well, it works for me." I am glad they have such luck.
Bottom line: use a NAS for live calibre book storage at your own risk, and when things go south be prepared to manually reconstruct your library. Personally, I wouldn't do it because the consequences of a failure can be enormous. |
