Hi,
my name is Nicola and I'm from Italy I'm getting passionate about buying my first ebook reader but unfortunately there are very few opportunities to see a demonstration... So, I'm not sure right now which one best fits my needs This is my criteria list: - eInk - must support pdf files natively as I have thousands of technical ebooks that can be printed in standard A4 format - must visualize standard technical ebooks in pdf format within a single page (no scrolling... I don't know if that applies to ebooks but in the pictures the screens don't look as big as a standard A4 sheet...) - should be able to underline, highlight, annotate the book as a standard old-style book and save all that - I'd like to have wifi connectivity to navigate web pages from it (optional) - I'd like to have a reasonable amount of space to store the ebooks in memory instead of bringing the usb key with me (a single technical ebook takes from a few Kb to a few tens of Kb) - text search capabilities Can you help me identify the best candidates in the different price ranges? ![]() Nicola Attico Last edited by nicola; 09-15-2008 at 05:38 PM. |

There are some other larger format devices in the pipe line but probably won't be out till "at least" next spring, perhaps next summer. Those being the Astak 9.7inch model, the Netronix (OEM) 9.7 inch device and the Plasticlogic reader. BOb |

I think the Plastic Logic might do the trick. But we will have to wait and see till they announce it in January sometime and then wait till spring sometime for it to be released.

The new iRex DR1000S or DR1000WS meet all your requirements, but are relatively expensive. Note that they will read PDFs but not Adobe Secure PDF ebooks, only Adobe Digital Editions will do this on EInk devices and that is only available from Sony at present.

PDFs with passwords should be ok. Secure Adobe PDF ebooks are only readable by a small number of Adobe products (Adobe Reader version 7 under Windows, or Adobe Digital Editions), and won't be usable on the DR1000. ADE is already available on the Sony PRS-505, so there is a good chance that it will be available on one or more large screen EInk readers by next spring.
If you can read the PDF using Adobe Reader version 8, or any 3rd party PDF reader, on a Desktop PC then it should also be readable on the DR1000. Last edited by wallcraft; 09-30-2008 at 12:09 PM. |
